it came up when i mentioned "basking in the glow of my wood stove"
so who among us heats with wood or just uses it when the power is out?
romantic fires do not count....those used to seduce or inspire

I heat with propane but have a fire glowing in the fireplace almost nightly and my dogs sure do appreciate it.

I do have a fireplace but no idea how to use it. So I leave it closed up with the poster of a fire in it! LOL Besides, don't really need it down here.

Gas here...two fireplaces but only use one, and that one rarely. I have no idea when the other was cleaned last, but frequently I hear birds singing as if they were in the room with me...I guess I prefer the bird song to the really rare craving for a cozy fire.
Now out camping in the north country...that's a whole 'nother thing!

I have friends who heat with wood, trying to save on heat bills... but unless you have property with a source of wood...
these days wood isn't cheap anymore, and so many cities are banning wood burning, and even fuel oil furnaces are not allowed to be installed here anymore...
my aunt and uncle had a woodburner auxilliary on their furnace, worked fine, until my uncle tried burning coke in it... he melted the firebox, nearly set the house on fire....

It stays warm enough in Florida that I think I have only run my space heater a couple hours this year. I don't run the central heat, so that is it, I just use the space heater, and very little at that. If it gets a little cool in my house I'll just wear a coat.
Whether it be summer or winter, my monthly electric bill never goes above $75
I take my impact on the planet serious, and I do my best to recycle, reduce consumption and preserve.

There are two types of wood. Hard wood and soft. Soft woods, like pine, are best for chimnea's as hardwood gets too hot and will crack the receptacle. On the flip side, pine wood is too pitchy for a wood stove. It's too soft and won't burn hot enough and will create a lot of chimney buildup. Only hardwoods like cherry, maple, hickory and the like should be burned in a stove. And only seasoned wood at that. About a decade ago, we used a stove. It was a Godin, and could burn coal or wood. I have to say, it's a messy proposition to use to heat a home, but economical, yes.

I keep a log on the fire from late November until March. When I designed my home I included vaulted ceilings with a reversable fan at the peak so the heat from the woodburner in my living room will heat my entire home. I saved the cost of a furnace and ductwork at the beginning, traded a large safe I had that a bank had junked to my brother for his Vigilant wood burner and the only cost I have for the wood is my labor. Besides my own supply, plenty of trees are available to be cut up throughout the year after storms hit.
If I dont have enough oak in the stove to make it through the night I also have electric baseboard heat that kicks in. I never used it much until Brenda moved in but waking up in a house thats 60 degrees doesnt fare well with a cute Sooner.

I use wood almost exclusively, I have a furnace, but it only kicks on when needed, I doubt if it kicks on 3-4 times a week. I have gone through almost 3 cords, and I got another last week. Not too bad considering we had 20 days last month below zero.
$140 a cord, not very cheap, but my familyroom & kitchen are usually near 80, and the back bedrooms are mid 60's, great for sleeping.
I also love to put some taters wrapped in foil thrown on the coals, makes them skins nice and crispy... I also go through about 3 gallons of water daily on the stove top to replace the moisture. Walking outside when it is 20 below to get wood isn't so bad, when you walk back in and it's almost 80 inside.
The pellet stoves are much nicer, a lot cleaner but finding good pellets and buying them by the ton can be a pain in the ass too. And, they don't give those away either.
I love the woodstove, and it is perfect just in case I ever lost power for any extended period of time.

When I was married to my ex, we had a Hardy wood burning stove. It was out in the back yard around 300 feet from the house. We also put some king of thing on the hot water heater to where the stove heated that water too. never ran out of hot water.

This year, I did not use my wood stove - but the previous two winters I did. Not a savings as wood is $150.00/cord - using about a cord a month. This year, without the horses (no electricity needed in the barn) my electrical bill, for heat (electric forced air furnace) and all other electricity - $112.00 per month on the equal payment plan (year round).
However, there is a noticeable difference in the heat. When it's really cold at -20 to -30 Celsius, the wood stove heats the entire house, warming the floors as well as the walls, etc. Electric heat just warms the air - but less labor intensive - no chopping wood, cutting kindling, starting the fire... keeping it going ...etc.

interesting only 2 so far. i would have thought more. i'm glad blue mentioned pellets stoves, i put one in when they were only 3 bucks a bag now they are 5. so i have been using wood again. i can get a cord of wood for 125 and a ton of pellets is almost 300 when i add in the cost of gas to drive 50 mi to get it....most wood sellers up here deliver.
thanks for your responses

I have a pot belly fire place in my living room. I've always been to nervous to run it with my little one. I think I'll use it next winter...he'll be five. I am spending a forutne this year on the gas and electric bill. That has got to change...

Count me in. I installed a 300,000 btu woodburner/boiler in my 3 car detached garage. It has underground water lines that run to heat exchangers in my house and a warm storage shed. I've burned about 6 cords that are mostly elm dead falls. I also made a log splitter out of a 1929 model A Ford chassis.

I have a fireplace, but it is downstairs in the rec room. My son had his bedroom there for a year, so now there is no furniture to sit on.
I had a good size maple tree cut down 2 years ago, and am just now running out of wood. I did share it with a neighbor, also...
