I was in my reading room and I came across this interesting article,
Not To Do List, by Cara Litke
....there are subtler ways to raise eyebrows.... Sticking to Your Clique. Tempting as it is to huddle in the corner with your friends, you come off antisocial. .. Save the conference for brunch the next day. Letting Your Eyes Wander. There's nothing sly about scanning the crowd while someone is talking to you. People do it all the time and it is so rude. Force yourself to maintain eye contact. Correcting Someone In Public. if someone mispronounces the name of a politician or designer, pretend you didn't notice. Correcting her will embarrass her, and you'll end up looking like a know it all. Talking Up Your Hostess Gift. It's not your place to suggest that the host opens that fantastic bottle of wine. Making a Big Adieu. When people say good bye it can be a buzz kill. rather then ruining the party's energy, tell one or two close friends you are leaving, then quietly kiss the host good night, and go.
Rudeness. I can't stand it. Nothing makes me run rude faster then seeing it done to others.
But I got a thinking, what would make it on an online NOT TO DO's List. ?
The top five are a good start, what are others?
Not To Do, The Forum Crier. Spreading the business of others that you have no party in just makes you a gossip. Not To Do Fake Profilor Creating more then one profile for your more then one personality shows even big personal issues to all others then what you may see for yourself.
What would you add?

These are all invisible people and when someone lets then affect their life, they need to examine how deeply there are living in a virtual world.

Good rule of thumb, and was the true intent of this thread, to have a little fun, yet what about online etiquette is there none?
IT"S JUST THE DAMN INTERNET. Are we to quick to forget of the little girl that was push to commit suicide over online harassment, by a bully? Or the teenager egged on by other to end his own life live on web cam? These things happen to offend. These things are REAL.
These are all invisible people and when someone lets then affect their life, they need to examine how deeply there are living in a virtual world. Spoken like a true net bully. No these are people, real people, humans with real feelings that extend them to us everyday in many different ways. How can you so quickly and so coldly dismiss them for being less, just because they socialize on line? If thats your belief, that everyone here is invisible, then how do you truly see yourself? Why are you even here if you can't see me, or your claimed friends?

Rude is rude, whether on the net or in real life. It's time some people learned how to be kind to others. Remember the golden rule: Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. There's a reason this (the golden rule) has been around so long. It's a good philosophy to live by.

A lot of people on here and the internet are real...they do care...they do have feelings and innocent agendas for being online... many on MD have sent messages of support, love and prayers for me and I don't discount their genuine compassion or consider them invisible. No-- I do not take the internet too seriously --however--I do take some people at face value---you have to have a good balance between trusting your instincts and having discernment of some motives.

you have to have a good balance between trusting your instincts and having discernment of some motives. These are both wonderful rules of thumb and excellent examples, much like Bards, Its easy to come up with the dos though. A lot Harder to come up with the Not To Do,
I wonder why?

I have to agree with mom ...again. These are invisible people. These are forums for random opinions from random people, If a random opinion hurts your feelings or invades your little bubble it's time to search who you are and how you see yourself.
Are we to quick to forget of the little girl that was push to commit suicide over online harassment, by a bully? Or the teenager egged on by other to end his own life live on web cam? These things happen to offend. These things are REAL This is a sad story of a young girl who can't see beyond her own self importance. As an adult I would endure anything knowing that people love me and depend on me to survive anything. Did she think of her parents or siblings other than I WILL SHOW YOU. Stupid kid! Maybe I'm cruel but I have little sympathy for one so self centered.

As you pointed out, she was "a young girl", you "as an adult" ... these are 2 different things, she was young, you are an adult. As for "can't see beyond her own self importance" it is called being a teenager. I doubt that she commited suicide because of having an "I WILL SHOW YOU" attitude. The young girl was bullied by an adult of one of her classmates I think. I find it harsh to call a young girl who commited suicide "stupid girl".
Every life is precious, I feel sorry for her parents and anyone else who have lost a loved one due to suicide.

Not To Do ....
~First do no harm.~
I try to teach this to my children. My oldest is 31 (OMG!!) & have been teaching this premise in word & example for these many years.
Be kind. Don't be rude.
"No these are people, real people, humans with real feelings that extend them to us everyday in many different ways." But somehow it is acceptable to many of you to be rude, crude, mean spirited here on the 'net.
I try to remind myself that the insults are thrown, the hate is spewed forth, the names are called by real people, too. That perhaps this rude person needs something. Maybe he/she needs me to Do No Harm or to Be Kind , to show by example.
Many people are "living in a virtual world" because it has become so easy. So should we insult them & suggest (in a mean spirited way) that they need help? Maybe they do. Maybe I do. Maybe you do. But the rude, crude, mean spirited words do not help. They most often do harm.
Holy Hell, I sound a bit PollyAnna-ish there. I DO get sarcasm & humor & silliness ... And laugh madly at much of it ...
Burns, buddy ... Good Blog.
To quote lyrics from a Jewel song:
" .. In the end, Only kindness matters.."
