It makes total sense why it would be considered a grain, and I never thought about it until now. I just assumed with everyone else that it was a vegetable. I knew it wasn't the healthiest of vegetables, but I thought it a veggie nevertheless.

On topic - definitely a grain.
Hijack:
Okay, next useless bit o' info: tomatoes are closely related to nightshade; the vines, leaves & roots of both are poisonous. Actually, the seeds of tomatoes are slightly poisonous, but it would take a very large amount to harm a healthy human.
Deadly nightshade isn't really that deadly, like the tomato, the fruit is actually fine (pretty violet flowers). I used to have it along a fence back in NYC, and the birds wintered over on the berries. The potato is also part of the nightshade family.

I was correct on all three, but could not be nearly as eloquent as my fellow forum users in my descriptive reasoning.

Ok time for Dr. Food to step in here!
Anything that contains seeds is a fruit.
Corn kernels are seeds and a cob is the fruit.
Vegetables are stems, leaves, roots or any other portion that DOES not have any reproductive capabilities. There is one exception but moot for this topic.
Corn is considered a grain in botanical terms.
In nutritional terms, corn is a VEGETABLE. these terms do not apply because it needs a category on the pyramid to fit in so it is classed as a veggy. The reason it is labled a veggy is because of the starchy nature not a meat such as a fruit.
But all that said.........
corn is a FRUIT.

Lima beans: legume, which means they require a bunch of little parasitic bacteria around their roots in order to grow properly.
Just back slowly away from the amateur botanists...we're a heartless bunch...

corn is not even a food. it comes out the same way it went in. chewing and digesting are a waste of time due to it's indestructible nature.
