Grooming Question for the Girls

Guys you won't be interested, so stop reading here. Really. Please?

Okay, question for the girls: I'm 31, and I've been dyeing my hair for 8 years (it started turning gray at 22...yikes!) I'm sick of it, and I've seen some really great-looking younger women who just go with what nature gave 'em. My mom had a fit when I asked her this, but I think I could pull it off...you know, the artistic look, slightly long ringlets, mostly gray. I have to dye it every two weeks, and it's driving me insane.

Whaddya think?

I thing that really the only person who can answer your question is YOU...

I started turning gray at 14... by the time I was 30 I had more gray than I did anything else so I started dying my hair... Someday I will stop dying it and will start looking "matronly". Just PLEASE GOD not today! I couldn't handle the questions about my "grand daughter" when I took my 2 year old out in public. LOL

Did you just read my post in 'Mid-Life Crisis'? I swear. I just posted it a few minutes ago.

This is pretty much what I said. There are few women who can get away with the gray ( I was actually speaking of salt and pepper). Most of us do look older.

Since I have never seen you in person--hard to say. I suggest you try growing it out, and see if you like it. If it doesn't work for you, color it again. I always like a weave, but they are pretty costly.

What have you got to lose? Maybe you could go to a place that sells wigs and try on a gray one. See how it looks.

Danae...great tips here...you could go to a professional salon and ask them and see about the idea of a frosting. They are really pretty.

MAngel, I know you're right about it being my decision, but it's tough. I will lose a certain number of "dateability points" with some guys, but how much does that matter?

Classy, lol, I read your post two seconds after posting this! Angel's comment brought it to mind. One thing that will change...I'll be able to wear different colors, I guess.

****
Angel, that might be a good way to transition! Here's another confession: I haven't stepped foot into a salon in six years. I learned to cut my own hair from a hairdresser friend, and...well...

I know I know Im not supposed to be here,,, However I am covering my eyes so calm down.

I have an aunt that ironically between the ages of twenty two and three had her hair just gradually go from raven black to pure white !

I barely remember her having black hair and have seen pictures of her with it, however I have always known her with white hair.
I have always thought she was a nice looking gal and still is in her sixties.

Now,,,, where do I find the door so I can get out of here ?

I've had a couple of friends that have had the premature greying issue. From what I've observed, and mind you this is just a personal opinion, only those who have that striking thoroughly silver grey hair can pull it off. Even my friend who had that incredible hair looked older than she was, but the hair was so striking that it was a reasonable tradeoff. My other friend had just the standard grey streaks in her chestnut colored hair. She has gone both ways with it, dyed and natural. She's opted for dyed even though it is more of a hassel just because it does make her look better. Grey seems harder to keep skin tones looking good.

Sea--take your first left. lol

Danae,

Good point about the wearing of different colors. That is something to consider. I died my hair red one time, and ALL of my make-up clashed. I had to go out and buy new everything. The thought of such never crossed my mind. It was an extra added expense.

I'm going to try it out, I think. Like you said, Classy, I can always dye it again!

Solitaire, the striking thing is of course what I'm hoping for, but it's been so long since I've had it under dye that I won't know for weeks.

Thank you all! I feel better now, and if it looks good, I'll get a pic taken in a few weeks & post it.

It could be ten times worse. You could be bald.

My adopted sister (we adopted each other 35 years ago) has had silver hair for most of those years, and it is, and always has been, gorgeous. Still, that's her, not you. You seem to have such a 'baby face' in your picture (and I don't mean that in a derogatory way, I'm never sure how people will interpret comments like that!) that I think the contrast between your face and your hair would be really interesting, but I'm not a guy.

For myself, I've now let my hair grow out completely from the red in my second picture. That, by the way, was at the request of ex-bf, who preferred my 'black and white' hair. At 62, it's still mostly brunette, with white 'wings' if I wear it forward; if I wear it pushed back I look entirely different again as it shows much more white. I'm still determined to go blonde once it's mostly white though...that is, if I live long enough. I can't believe how long it's taking!

"Whaddya think?"

Let nature take it's course and see how it goes. I rarely comment on a womans hair but every once in a while I see a woman with such beautiful hair and have to tell them - and it's been gray more than once.

You wanna talk pain? Until last May, my hair was down to my butt and I colored it for years and years.

But, I had always wanted my hair to go white because I think premature grey can be a very striking look. So when I realized how much I really and finally had, I quit coloring it.

I don't lack for compliments, either. If anything, I get many not only for my "looks", but also for having the courage to show the real me.

So I say, go for it! But remember that you do have to make slight adjustments in your makeup.

I think that grey hair although it may look nice, it makes the wearer look older. Just my opinion.

Well, it's on its way as we speak...I overcame the urge last night & pu the old Preference back in the cupboard

Scurious, yours is very close to what I'm hoping for; it's beautiful that way!

Oh, and another thing: my hair was straight as a stick until it started going gray, and then it became gradually wavier. Gray can be a good thing!!

Danaw my personal opinion if dye it! I think grey hair would make you look in your forties not your thirties.
