A free country is run by elected officials and some are obviously dishonest people.Since our country operates with a seperation of church and state one cannot really fault that dishonesty with religion but other reasons.Greed...power etc.
I found a short note in my denominations devotional but to keep this topic about honesty I only quoted a portion of it.
IT'S not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game. One of the officials who was scheduled to work our daughter's high-school basketball game failed to show up. The host school offered to forfeit the game, but our team declined the offer, opting to play anyway. The lone official explained to the girls that he would be unable to see everything and that he would need their help. As the game progressed, we observed the true spirit of athletic competition. When the referee was unable to see, the girls responded by admitting violations. When a call was in doubt, the offending player acknowledged that she had committed the foul or was out of bounds. That evening the focus was clearly on how they played the game. These high-school girls served as an example for all of us as we face daily decisions. We must make the call: reporting or not reporting undocumented income; being faithful or unfaithful to our spouse; engaging or not engaging in hurtful gossip. Do we live honestly even when telling the truth brings consequences we would like to avoid? Since church and state are seperated as they should be for obvious reasons, how can we all find the same integrity that those highschool basketball players could find...thats missing in us?
The world has to play by the rules in sports because the rules are governed by honest referees. If the referee is dishonest, they are removed. Sure...its easy to do because its only sports but why is having integrity so hard to do in other competitions of life?

doing the right thing, it really is a simple concept, its not about getting caught, or the repercussions of bad actions... it should be about the satisfaction of doing the right thing, about making your corner of the world a better place...
Yesterday I was in a hurry, My sister was hosting family and friends for the 4th, she asked my to bring ice for the coolers of soda...
so I was leaving the gas station/ convenience store, and a car pulls in front of me and cuts me off, an older couple asks me if I will check the tires on their car and air them up... (all 5, the spare too...) and they want to pay me 20 dollars, he has macular degeneration and can't see the tire gauge... and she has never learned...
so I spent 20 minutes showing the wife how the tire gauge works, and airing all the tire to 35 lbs exactly...
so when I finish, I take the time to coil the air hose properly on the rack... most folks just throw the hose at it... the couple ask me if 20 is enough... so I tell them I can't take their money, My grandfather had macular degeneration, and people were always nice enough to help them out... and its my duty to pass on the same behavior...

Honesty in life isn't hard. Some people try to complicate it to cover their own inability to be honest.
Like asking someone a simple yes or no question, and they give you a 5 minute answer that is neither a yes, or a no. Or getting drunk and killing a guy, then trash talking the man after you buy the family's silence.
Honesty is simple. Maybe that's the problem. People like things complicated, when sometimes, it really is that easy.

it should be about the satisfaction of doing the right thing I agree!! We were brought up that way.. that you help out others without monetary reward.....the reward is in the knowing that you helped someone. Although, good deeds do seem to get rewarded when you least expect it
I can't recall the number of times I have been given to much change from a store/gas station....and I always return the extra without thought....it never enters my mind to keep it.
I may not be perfect but I do try to be honest, compassionate and giving. Makes MY world a better place to know I am striving to be a better human.

Living life honestly isn't as easy as it sounds. You not only have be honest with yourself, but then act on that honesty. I know I can usually be honest with myself, but I don't always want to be so honest with myself. Honesty can be painful.

When honesty is used in our lives its easily remembered and stays the same...while dishonesty can be forgotten and changes because it is forgotten. Therefore,I think people that have a great memory are the more dishonest people.

I try to be honest, if only because I can't remember what lie I told! LOL No seriously, it's just easier to try to be honest for me. Yes, sometimes I may tell what we call a "little white lie" to avoid hurting someone's feelings but that's about it. I just wish all the people I meet tried as hard to be truthful.

Therefore,I think people that have a great memory are the more dishonest people. I know what you're getting at but I'm sure there are plenty of people who have excellent memories and are quite honest people.
I'm always honest myself. Even in instances when it would be so much easier to be dishonest. Taking pains to explain and re-explain to a cashier who couldn't comprehend how she had gotten the totals wrong and given me too much change. It would have been easier and taken MUCH less time had I simply pocketed the money, but I just can't bring myself to do something like that. Right is right.
So no kjac, I don't think honesty is hard per se, it is simple but sometimes it's not so easy. Those who lack integrity, manipulators and dishonest people all complicate things that are otherwise simple.
It's always a fabulous lesson for children to learn to monitor their own behavior and keep themselves honest. I applaud the examples cited in this thread.
