Perhaps one of you smart people can answer THIS one for me...
I've bought batteries from the Dollar Tree in my city. I'm talking EVERREADY, not some cheap knock-off like "Lou's Batteries", and they don't seem to last very long. If you've bought batteries recently, you know that at "regular" stores, the prices are ASTRONOMICAL! So, how can these dollar stores sell THEIR batteries so cheap? Are the batteries that the get manufacturer's "rejects"?

Because they are made cheap.

Maybe you could invest in a charger and rechargeables.
It will cost more at first.

One of the ways dollar-store type outlets sell below the cost of other retailers is they buy "seconds" or old stock or production run tailings for less than first-quality stock.

My guess is that although they were are sold as they near their expiration dates. Even unused batteries only hold a charge for so long then die.

Batteries rely on chemical reactions. When all the chemicals have reacted together, the juice is gone.

When batteries sit unused, the chemical reaction still takes place, but at a slow pace. But eventually, they will be used up just as if they had been used in some kind of device.

Dollar stores buy products cheap for various reasons, production overruns, "slightly" defective products (or even packaging), discontinued products, etc.

WHen you see things that are stocked regularly.... like brand name batteries, toothpaste, etc. it's common for the reason to be that it is near or even past its sale expiration date.

Most major battery manufacturers will put an expiration date on the batteries that is somewhat conservative (not because they are nice guys, but because they want you to buy more instead of using the batteries past that date).

So normally you should be able to get a reasonable amount of life even if the expiration date is slightly exceeded. BUT.... a lot depends on how the batteries have been stored. Some temperature and environmental conditions are death to batteries and can cause them to fail even before the marked expiration.

General answer....
Dollar stores and batteries..
Don't!

Like DR said....dollar store & batteries...DON'T.

I've read lots of articles over the past couple of years about how business is booming for all of the "dollar stores." You can get some really good buys in there...but every article I've ever read highlighting the good & not so good, recommends NOT purchasing batteries at the dollar store.

...says the Rhodes Scholar

Probably not the best idea to buy batterries at a dollar store.....of course Walmart's might cost a bit more but still are discounted....Lori's idea is a good one...especially after the initial layout of money
