As far as I know, they've been there as long as I've been on the site. I'm just not real sure what the purpose is. It's kind of like an alternate e-mail, I guess? One that other people can see.

yep...that goes to prove it...i AM slow....

I know they haven't always been there.
I'm thinking they came to be with the last big site "upgrade."

Yep, I think it was the last big upgrade, along with being able to post pics and links and such, but I think it was more than two years ago...

Heaven, I just looked at your "shoutouts," and it looks like the oldest one you have is from August 2006. (It doesn't give the year on them, but they're in chronological order by date received. The last one you got was in December 2008, then you can see where you got some over the year between then and December 2007, and a few in the year between then and December 2006, and finally, the oldest one you have.)
That would have been well before I joined. So, as far as I know, they were always there.
Maybe Mod'll drift through and tell us when they instituted the feature.
