..is me......
Slashfood's Hanna Raskin has made an interesting (and controversial) argument that restaurant customers are doing themselves and their servers a disservice by leaving a "standard" 15-percent tip for good service.
"Want to really confuse your server? Leave a 15-percent tip," she writes. "There's nothing more ambiguous than the 15-percent tip, which could just as well be a 'thanks for nothing' grat from a miffed diner who always leaves 20 percent or a sincere show of gratitude from an infrequent restaurantgoer who thinks 15 percent is still the going rate for good service. Only the tipper knows for sure."
According to Raskin (blogger, server and food-tour organizer) leaving a 15-percent tip isn't just rude, it's also unrealistic, insensitive, ungrateful and outdated.
Think that $3 tip on a $20 bill is fine? Think again, she says. If you want to let your server know he or she did a fine job, you're going to have to do better.
"Surveys show the vast majority of Americans have transitioned away from the 15-percent standard which ruled the food and beverage industry for decades, with the national average tip rising to 19 percent in 2008," she writes. "Just as the public realized that folks who toil on assembly lines and sell costume jewelry at the mall deserve a minimum wage, diners have finally caught on to the real value of service. As we approach Labor Day, your server thanks you for that."
What do you tip? What do you think of Raskin's argument? Anyone care to add additional points for her case? Anyone care make the argument for a 15-percent tip for decent service?

I used to tip ten percent... but then was told I was being too cheap..
so let's see.....15 percent used to be a good tip... but now....
it is normal, and not even considered to be a good tip..
where will it all stop??.....betting the owners are wanting the servers to just stfu and be happy they have a job.. because bad service and higher prices...just.....drives the customers ...
away.....

I tip 10% when I go out to eat with my friends and I have to leave the tip. I don't have much money....if I had a job and more money to spend I'd tip more, certainly, but I'm not gonna go out of my way and throw all my money at other people when I hardly ever have it

We had one customer, Marvin....came in everyone weekday morning on his way to work.
He would order bacon and eggs, hash browns and toast, order of pancakes, coffee, milk and OJ. I swear he drank a dozen cups of coffee, too. He never made eye contact or smiled. Just read the paper.
Whoever was lucky to get him....got a quarter.
(at least he didn't cause any trouble)

<-- has never been a 'frugal tipper'. Even when I didn't make much, I'd skip some other 'luxury' to leave a decent tip. I never worked as a waitress but a couple of my friends did so I got to appreciate close up just how exhausting the job was, especially for the single moms (or dads too). If somebody can put their aching feet and backs out of their minds to cater to me, I am going to make it a point to leave them a good tip. Special service, especially with a smile and a joke, gets an even bigger one.
I'll normally tip 20%, and as I said, more for special handling...and I've been known to go to 50% (on a pretty good-sized tab) when someone's really gone out of their way for me (but not in the days when I was barely getting by - but I didn't go out to eat in those days either).

I agree, Heaven. Some show on tv the other day said all people should be a wait person just once in their life to experience "the other side of the table." I agree.
I love working with people, I loved waitressing. I would do it again if I could.

Lol, of course I pay at least 20%. Been there done that. Some days it was a thankless job. By that I mean rude people. not so much the tip they left. Even a rude person could leave me 50%, and if they came back, I would not wait on them.
It really amazes me at how peopel think they can jst be so rude. yes, RUDE is my word for the day.
I understand when some people don't have the money to leave one too. I taught my sons that if you can afford to go out and eat, then plan on tipping at least 15 or 20 %. They do, and I am so happy about that.

I've never waited tables in my life. I'm pretty sure my demeanor would not make for a great waitress/server. At any rate...I DO appreciate how hard these people work. I try not to ask for any special treatment & always ask ahead as a rule when I need something. And if I am in a position that I cannot afford to tip graciously, I do NOT go out to eat in a sit down restaurant to be waited on.

The rudest customers we ever got were the Highway Patrol. About 4 of them would show up at the same time, and talk down their nose, run you around, and leave NO tip.
The Policemen were always kind and tipped.
Both groups got 50% off because of their job.

I've left a $50.00 tip for a waitress one time after I bought a single $4.00 beer. She seemed extremely cool and attentive to me, so I decided to reward her well.
If I get sh!tty service the waiter or waitress is going to pay for it big time. Because instead of giving them a tip I turn into a mean nasty A-hole and dump the food on the table and smear it or the floor and mash it into the carpet. Then I'll will tell the waitress Fvck you as I'm walking out of the door.... that is my nasty tip for being served raw onions when I Expressedly requested that I not be served them then I end up waiting 45 mins to receive a double order of raw onions on my meal piled high (half the meal is diced raw onions).
If you don't believe me you should ask my mom and all of my sisters... they are scared to go out to dinner with me at a restaurant. Especially when it was my birthday

What happened to you? That is so not cool. Get up and freaking leave-you aren't 3 I was extremely offended. The kitchen and waiting staff shouldn't have even kept me and my family waiting for 45 mins. They could have saved all of us lots of time by coming out and urinating on my family and pooping in our plates right at the table...... it would have been equally as insulting to me but at least I could have found another restaurant in time to go to celebrate my birthday.
Maybe I'll get into the practice of pinning a note (like the teachers in grade school used to do to kids so that their moms would get the message before the kid forgot to relay it) onto the waiter or waitresses shirt lapel?
I don't go to a restaurant on my birthday to burn up the whole night waiting for incompetent waiting staff to f-up my meal and my night.
If everything is done right I'll tip 15%, if it was done extraordinarily well then they get more.
I don't believe in tipping someone just because they applied to work at a restaurant and hate the job but they have to do it because it's the only game in town that they can find. They dread coming to work but they refuse to quit and relocate to a city to pursue a job that would better match their interests. So the customer has to suffer because of this.
What's my point? I will only grant a tip if it has been earned.
Washington state guarantees (forces employers to pay) all workers in the food service catagory the state minimunm wage of $8.55 per hour just to be present at work and breathe.

That's missing the whole point loreli.......
The kitchen and waiting staff shouldn't have even kept me and my family waiting for 45 mins.
at least I could have found another restaurant in time to go to celebrate my birthday .
Most of the restaurants were closed by that time of the evening. If they did not want to serve us they could have told all of us that they were closing for the evening. We had 3 car loads of people that evening so they would have all been well tipped for their efforts.
Why did they make us wait before ruining my night?

You know, in the 12 years post divorce, I have eaten probably 90% of my meals out. I honestly have not been treated rudely, unfairly, or even incompetently EVER by any wait staff in any restaurant. Maybe it's my attitude, if I go in with a smiling face, knowing I'll be getting a good meal and service, and act civil to the person who will take my order, I'll get a satisfactory experience in return. It works for me
(I also tip well, very well, because I know what it feels like to work your a** off)
