Someone mentioned this in a thread in the P&CE forums, and I thought it deserved it's own thread.
Could everyone here that works from home explain what you do, in order to perhaps give a hand UP to any fellow MDer?
I work from home. I am a medical transcriptionist. This is a job that has always had a larger-than-average percentage of its practitioners working from home. I have been doing this both "in-house" (on site in a healthcare facility) or from home for about 17 years now. What it entails is listening to dictation by medical professionals and typing what they dictate. We have an umbrella acrediting professional organization, The Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity. Some employers pay higher rates for being acredited than non-acredited, though many do not differentiate.

The bad news is that although there are a great many home-study programs advertised to get into this line of work, if you do not have at least 2-3 years experience, right now it is very difficult to find anyone who will hire you. Equipment and reference materials can be very expensive, depending on who you are going to work for. A transcribing system can cost upwards of several hundred dollars, or may be nothing more than your computer, high speed internet access, a foot pedal and a pair of headphones. A set of basic reference works you will need will run about $350, though some can be purchased used. (When purchasing used, however, be aware that many of these references are updated, if not yearly, at least every couple of years, and something like a drug reference book 5 years old is worthless.)

Just about everything else about the business is too broad to make any generalizations about. A good account can pay $600-$700 per week gross, without killing yourself. A bad account will leave you frustrated to tears and making next to nothing.

If one is healthy....childcare can bring in lots of money.
I would childproof and safeguard my home first. Pick the ages of children you can/will take.
Check with your state to see how many you can watch alone.

I am healer. I took classes for it and work on the phone. I make good money at it but you have to take refresher classes and keep up to date...just like any one in the health care business.

I also make lots of various arts and crafts and when I sell, I make good money as well. You have to find places to sell tho. Lately I have not been selling because i moved from my known place and they had serious destruction due to Ike and the venue is not there yet. In true art and craft fairs most likely you have to take pictures of the stages of your art to prove you are actually making it yourself. So you would need a camera and a tent and tables and chairs and displays. It gets expensive.

I hear Etsy is a good venue but ebay is not. Everyone wants to make a killing off you in ebay. They are spoiled because they can buy that fake trash for nothing. The people lie til they get busted for it then you have a lot of trashy fake jewelry that may contain lead.

I also sell some products to trim the fat off your body in spot places kind of like liposuction. Another one is drug free energy and pain patches and but I have not been using them. I forgot about them. These are multilevel businesses and a few people do buy from me but mostly I signed up so I could get it cheaper for my own use.

Jalon: prostitution?

...I could be wrong and all, but it seems a lot easier to just find a husband with a job, as for thousands of years, husbands have yet to figure the real deal out; beginning with Adam.

...Get you one about 70 and you could be considered semi-retired and... no income taxes to pay.

I worked from home for several years. I did the exact same thing I would have done in my office. Selling a product. Had my own phone and fax lines and computer with high speed internet. Thats all you really need these days. You can work from anywhere.

There are a lot of fakes places that tell you you are going to make lots of money doing whatever but the truth is, you have to sign more and more and more people up and the people that make the money are the people that sign so many up. But the people below you make no money, work their asses off and the people on the top stay there til it stops making them money then go to another site and bring their whole crowd with them again....make the big bucks and again...move on.

I saw a google offer to make money. They claim it to be free or prtend it is a job or make no claims about it in any way and then after a certain point into the sign up, they make you give a credit card and they charge you every month afterwards whether you use the deal or not. And then they sell you as a sucker to many other people. At this time you start getting phone calls from people trying to sign you up for something else or sell something to you and your inbox is full of spam.
Make money from home....sure...they make money off you from your home to their pocket.

Those network marketing gigs tell you you have to buy this or buy that to be successful. Guess what, the people you have to buy it from are successful...not you. You are just supporting them. Add it up. You end up cancelling out the money you make by how much you have to spend. I have had a few that actually made me money out of how many? Maybe 15? Three I was able to make money at.

I have two "regular" jobs and write from home. Once I become a best-selling author, I'll ditch one or both of the others. LOL
