I watched the news last night and they said the dead sea is dying! Umm, I will really have think about that one, am I missing something here? Perhaps some of you smarter people can guide me through this difficult period.

Substitute the word "disappearing" for "dying" and it makes more sense. The news report was referring to the fact that the Dead Sea has been shrinking for decades due to the diversion of water from the Jordan River. In the past 39 years, the level of the Dead Sea has fallen seventy-two feet.

Incidentally, the Dead Sea is so salty (between six to ten times saltier than the ocean) than even such an infamous and unrepentant sinner as Chubs could practically walk on it.

Well, people don't really "swim" in the Dead Sea - they just "hang out". That's what's so cool about the Dead Sea. Because of the extremely high concentration of dissolved mineral salts in the water its density is way more than that of plain old fresh water. What this means is our bodies are more buoyant in the Dead Sea - so you bob like a cork. In fact, people are so buoyant in this water, it makes it kinda tough to actually swim.

Why Is It Called the Dead Sea?

At 1300 feet below sea level you would think some liquid would try and creep in somehow!

There is not much liquid available to fill it. The Jordan River has been almost entirely diverted for agriculture and other purposes; the area receives less than three inches of rain per year (and that in an area where the temperatures range between 68 and 100 degrees which, of course, leads to rapid evaporation); and the Judean mountains to the west block moisture from the Mediterranean which is forty-miles away. Groundwater levels have also declined as Israel and Jordan both rely heavily on the region's aquifers for water. It is actually a marvel that the lake has not become a cesspool as the only water it now receives comes from sewage and wastewater.
