I don't know if this will get any response but . . .
What are your thoughts beliefs feelings about this day?
Yesterday I watched on PBS - American Experience - Dr. King which was an amazing documentary on Dr. King's civil rights career. When he preaches on black/white film it brings chills up my spine he is so inspirational. Only 3 yrs old when he died so these TV specials are my only memories.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal."
From every mountainside, let freedom ring.
When we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"
Never let it be said that words do not have power. May it be that the gods and the angels are holding you close, Martin, and that some day your dream will come true.
I, for one, believe.

Martin was and is a blessing from heaven.
I too get chills up and down my spine when I hear old excerpts from his speeches. And every time I hear that "I Have A Dream" speech, I weep, always.
Every time I hear it, it sounds new...as if the words are timeless, and are meant to resonate in our ears, hearts, and Souls as always new so that we never stop believing that his dream can be reality if we would only let it be so.
His dream becomes our dream, and it is paradise!
It's like a prayer that rings in the mind, heart and Soul of our nation....a prayer that we say, coming from the depth of our being, our soul, the ONE Soul that abides in us all.

I respect the man, his beliefs, and the Federal holiday.
But alas I am here at work tutoring students, no day off for me.

Many men have helped shape America.
Some men have helped shape the world - among them was Martin Luther King, Jr.

Just makes me sick that they call it that instead of Civil Rights day or something. There were a whole lot of other people who did just as much for the movement as he did, without all the power, prestige, money and bodyguards to hide behind. And if you want to know what a joke it is to african americans, catch Kid Rock on the subject sometime.

I think it's a shame what the current "leaders" of the civil rights movement have done with Dr. King's legacy. They've turned into their own little pity parades and fundraising opportunities. If you added Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and Kweisi Mfume all together, you wouldn't have enough character to fill Dr. King's left shoe.
And New Orleans' Mayor Ray Nagin, and his comments yesterday about making New Orleans a "chocolate city..." And how he didn't care what "those people in Uptown" think.
It just leaves you shaking your head and wondering who the racists are.

Until they rename it to Civil Rights Day or something, I won't even honor this "holiday". King didn't do anything more than a whole lot of other people for the civil rights movement. He was just the political figurehead who "fought" surrounded by security, with money and power to back him, while the others were just regular people who paid with their lives as well. And yes, I have met more black racists than white. And for the record, I can pick the "Other" box on the forms for race. My people still don't even get a box of their own on that very long list.

I think it is terrible how what he preached has been perverted and twisted into some convoluted mess that he would not even recognize. Mostly what he spoke about was love and peace in Jesus Christ. Not to mention that his name is Martin Luther King Jr. Funny how so many people leave Jr. off now. MLK was his dad.

A man who had to hide in the back of a car.. because the police department won't help him to escape a lynching...has prestige?...
Maybe we are thinking of two different people....
And when did kid rock become a spokesman for anyone except Pamela Anderson...
I figured someone would bring race into this discussion....Dr. King was against racism in every sense of the word...
He wanted us to all live together as a race of HUMAN BEINGS.
And as far as getting mail delivered, maybe we should ignore Thanksgiving ,also since it was based on how indians helped the pilgrims and then later were forced to live on reservations.
Or Columbus Day, where many of Native Americans chose not to celebrate...bet they would like their mail on that day.
How about...Washington's Birthday...a man who owned slaves maybe we should get mail on that day...
Of course I am being sarcastic..
Did any of them express a need for all races to love one another...yet they have days....
I don't have an issue celebrating those days because they all add some history and substance to our nation and its continued growth.
Why is it an issue for one man to have a special day that serves all of us...to help us one day understand and live in harmony.

I grew up in the deep south during that time.I was 8 when MLK was assassinated.I remember him being demonized by the redneck mentality of the day.Fortunatley my parents were NOT racists. My mom grew up in rural Georgia during the Great Depression and was a sharecropper's daughter. Her skin was lilly white but being that her family were sharecroppers, she and my aunts, uncle and grandparents were on the same rung of the socioeconomic ladder as the African American. She had to enter the plantation house through the back door and work in the fields on wages that equalled slavery.
When I was about 4 or 5 and saw the separate water fountains and restaraunts I thought that black people drank different water and ate different foods, that they had a different anatomy somehow. It never occured to me that people just didn't like each other..Hate was not something that I was taught and I'm very thankful for that.

Personally, I believe that this particular holiday is a farce! It was even forced on the state of Arizona! The man was a womanizer. Not to mention that this holiday is the ONLY holiday named after a person, since Presidents day. The idea the Martin King is exhalted to this position infuriates me! There's simply NO comparison to our founding fathers. I think James Earl Ray is just as worthy!

I not only agree with aaamassager, Thor gives a perfect example of why I am sick of black people acting like they are the only ones who have to deal with ..."Her skin was lilly white but being that her family were sharecroppers, she and my aunts, uncle and grandparents were on the same rung of the socioeconomic ladder as the African American. She had to enter the plantation house through the back door and work in the fields on wages that equalled slavery."
Just wish they would quit acting like poverty and discrimination are something that only the black people experience.

Excellent, the bratt. It's interesting if you travel to other countries,Canada,France,Germany,England,Scandinavia.Ther are large populations of "opressed" people of many other races,Somalis,Pakistanis and such, who are playing the same pity party card.
The bottom line:We are ALL in this life together and no one will get out of it alive (Jim Morrison).EVERY race on the planet has suffered discrimination, prejudice, racism, slavery and generally being treated like crap. It's time every one got over themselves and got on with life.
Life AIN'T fair, fair is something that comes to town once a year and it's time people got over that fact.
