Online At Work

How does this happen? I'm honestly asking.

Where I work, we are not allowed to be online for any reason other than business related research, etc. There's a written policy on it and when some people break the policy, the policy is redistributed, and I think the person or the people who break the policy are given a warning or are written up if they've been warned before. Our computer usage is monitored.

Are people using their personal computers, and are you allowed to be online during work hours?

Also, how does anyone have time to be online during work hours? I guess in my position, I have just enough time to have lunch and use the restroom , certainly no time to be online or on MD.

Enlighten me

when i worked at mci, we had the internet. they didn't care what we did as long as we didn't frequent porn sites; aol messenger was an integral part of communicating between sites.

as i've mentioned on another thread, i worked in a speech pathology dept of a hospital. that department frowned upon IM, and people did it on the sly. i noticed in other departments, employees used it openly. of course, no porn downloads or anything that disrupted hospital business.

both places acknowledged the means of monitoring, but the hospital computer ops were practically idiots. they couldn't monitor a bowel movement, so maybe that's why the place was so lax. being online is just sitting there in cyberspace, talking on chat, etc, and still getting your work done. i'm sure any employer would pull the cyberplug if employees were sloughing off at their jobs because of the internet.

btw, no one has internet access at my current job except the "upper echelon".

I'm self-employed so I can be on-line and my boss is cool about it.

I used to get online at work. It was at 3:00 am in the morning though. No one around and it was my lunch break.

angel, the real problem of work not getting done rests with the individual. if the internet didn't exist, the same slackers would be on the phone, sharpening a pencil, etc.

btw, pete's boss is a big ol perv.

I use to work in an office where I had alot of down time. I would do my school work or get online. The boss knew we had down time at certain times of the month. If we had our work done, it wasnt a problem to get online. Now when I am online I am at home. My social work job doesn't allow me computer access unless I am at home. I am usually in a car, home, jail, court, etc when I am working.

Lec has another thread going about this. No woman should have to do this to get ahead at her job.

Eewww, that's just sick.

Well, I'm not my own boss, but he does sit right next to me. He knows I'm always available in an emergency, always do more than my job requires, always look for ways of preventing problems and (quoting him) I'm a multitalented multitasker. I normally have 10 or 12 windows open and actually MD is far less demanding than the 3 or 4 chat conversations I usually have going, a couple of which are frequently with fellow posters. Since I'm sitting at a terminal anyway, glancing over at MD and tossing in an occasional post takes nearly no time at all.

You really wouldn't want me to think of you like that. I have far too much respect for you as you are.

btw, MD says it doesn't mind wandering now and then if the writer usually stays on topic; hence, the off-topic emoticon.

Yeah'but ummmm..
..then the rest of us feel unwelcomed by an otherwise inviting thread, or at least left questioning whether or not we should even add our thoughts, on topic...

Mothernatures, of course you should add your thoughts on any thread, that it what it is all about! Sometimes the chatting just gets in there until a new position or opinion gets things rolling right back on topic again.
