Ok, I have a theory, and I need a little more information .... So, I'm asking for your help..
If any of you or your family members, even co workers have had the flu so far this season, were they tested to know for sure if it was H1N1 to confirm it....??
I heard they are not even testing, or if they do, there is a charge of $500....
Has anyone experienced this ?
Seems to me, the flu is the flu and treated as such. Especially with so many claiming to have it.
I also wonder if hearing so many at school are sick, if kids are faking some of it to stay home.... Then after a certain number, they close the schools....

One thing is for sure, those high temps can't be faked.
I keep my 8 y/o baby niece 3 days a week.... The first day I picked her up from school, she was not well. She had fever & aches, was nauseated, etc. She stayed out of school the next 2 days, but started improving on the 3rd day. Guess what else started happening on the 3rd day? I started running fever, had awful aches & pains & generally felt like hell. That nite, I had high fever & chills. The next day was pretty rough. By the next day I was feeling better & by Sunday, as it was, I was up & about. Last week when I went to the doctor for my annual check-up he said I probably had the flu. I can tell you I've never had fever with aches like that except for with the flu, but I was amazed at how quickly whatever it was, it seemed to run its course.
Of course, you realize, all of the flu going around is not H1N1.....

Down here in Texas, to be sure if it's H1N1, blood work needs to be sent to the state. It would take 2 weeks to one month to find out for sure and by then you're over it anyway, so who cares? Treatment for both is pretty much the same. It's only when someone is so bad that they have to be hospitalized that the testing is done.
Unfortunately the only confirmed cases we've had down here are children who died from it.

H1N1 is running like a fire here in Minnesota, they are turning some of the closed schools into clinics for hospitalizing the bad cases... the state health department announced here that all the flu tests so far have been H1N1 here..
the local stores have Purell wipe dispensers at the cart racks, and I've never seen so many people wearing masks at the stores

H1N1 is picking up some steam here. I don't think that's what mine is, but I'll know for sure tomorrow.

The wipes at the door and carts sound awesome!
I am trying to be so careful, dealing with the public...I don't dare come down with the flu with my immune system so sucky.
Grumble! So good to see you!

as for the op...
the flu has been a problem for ever...
my thoughts are that this is more a case of...
Self-fulfilling prophecy From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A self-fulfilling prophecy is a prediction that directly or indirectly causes itself to become true, by the very terms of the prophecy itself, due to positive feedback between belief and behavior. Although examples of such prophecies can be found in literature as far back as ancient Greece and ancient India, it is 20th-century sociologist Robert K. Merton who is credited with coining the expression "self-fulfilling prophecy" and formalizing its structure and consequences. In his book Social Theory and Social Structure, Merton gives as a feature of the self-fulfilling prophecy: Ie: when Roxanna falsely believes that her marriage will fail and fears such failure will occur that it actually causes the marriage to fail.
The self-fulfilling prophecy is, in the beginning, a false definition of the situation evoking a new behaviour which makes the original false conception come 'true'. This specious validity of the self-fulfilling prophecy perpetuates a reign of error. For the prophet will cite the actual course of events as proof that he was right from the very beginning.[1] In other words, a prophecy declared as truth when it is actually false may sufficiently influence people, either through fear or logical confusion, so that their reactions ultimately fulfill the once-false prophecy.

We have one officially diagnosed case of N1H1 (they did blood tests and she came back positive). And now one of the people who also uses that desk and computer is home sick. As we all share computers where I work, and we all are using the purell stuff and spraying down the keyboards... not really sure how much it really will help. I just figure if I get it, I do, and get sick for a while. I am more concerned about the moms with little kids at home... This too will pass, but I wonder what the 'cost' will be.. this is a bad season..

I'm getting vaccinated...I usually don't, but since I figure the worst that can happen is that I'll walk backwards forever like that cheerleader it's a risk I'm willing to take...I haven't had it yet and don't want to.
With my job I'm at a high risk for getting it too.

Just got my flu shot last weekend, the seasonal flu one. We've been hit bad here with H1N1, local deaths include a teenager and a 25 year old soldier at Luke AFB.
H1N1 is definitely a different critter from the seasonal one - seasonal deaths are usually more likely to occur in the elderly while H1N1 is far more likely to kill the younger population. The percentage breakdown by age for H1N1 is 25% from 0-25 years, 65% from 26-64 and only 10% over 65. This is suggesting that it may be an older strain that's resurrecting itself - where older people have some immunity that younger ones haven't yet developed.
I had something (diagnosed as severe bronchitis) back in June - fyi though, while I had a severe cough, I also had a fever and considerable intestinal distress, which was why I thought it might have been flu. No cultures were ever done, so I'll never know for sure, but it was definitely mild compared to the totally devastating flu I remember having had in my younger days. I couldn't walk three steps without having to grab something back then and this was nowhere near like that.
Flu is definitely not something to minimize. It looks as though older people can resist H1N1 better than younger ones, for whatever reason. Use the wipes; cough and sneeze into your elbow, not your hand; carry hand sanitizer or wipes with you and use them frequently; and if you have a habit of touching your eyes, BREAK IT!! That's one of the most common ways we spread infections to ourselves (that's to emphasize to myself too, I have a habit of rubbing my eyes when I'm tired).

Yes, people born before 1950 have some immunity to it. I Believe it has something to do with the Spanish flu back then. My father who is 80, got the regular flu shot, but his doc said he didn't think he needed the other one.
We will be getting the regular one this weekend, and when there is enough for everyone, we will get the Swine flu one.
Oh, and becareful with using the hand sanitizer instead of washing your hands. It is mostly alcohol, an is very flameable (sp) too. They are recommending that child not use it. Plus, my opinion, in doctors offices, they need to take the time to wash hands, not just squirt some lotion. This is stuff i then on the hands, and gets on other stuff.

The flu is the flu...doesn't matter what kind it is as it all gets treated the same way!

I had what i believe is the swine flu, and as far as flu's go, it was cake. I believe it is swine flu because i got it from my girl friend, which got it from the company that she works for, which consist of about 160 employees. Of the employees that came down with it and went to the doctor, everyone was diagnosed as swine flu. I can not tell you want the diagnosis procedure was. And whether it was observing symptoms or a test.

Testing in Oklahoma is a nasal swab and the results are almost instantaneous. Don't know the charge but insurance must be covering it since all 3 of my sister's kids have been tested. (Negative)
Lots of flu in my son's school...neither one of us has been sick.
I figure you'll get it or you won't and the more you worry about it, the more likely you are to get it...JMO.
