I was a foster child beginning at the age of 12. I am now 45 years old and my foster family is "my family". I love them dearly.

Growing up without a solid foundation (loving family all your own), can really 'maim' a child. There are all sorts of core issues that arise when a child feels like 'nobody loves me'.

Due to my childhood experiences, I faced serious setbacks as an adult. I found that I learned things in my thirties that I could have, should have, learned as a teenager. (such as the value of daily routines)
My emotional maturity at thirty was more like that of a twelve year old.
There are other issues, like a fear of abandonment, extreme sensitivity, poor self esteem, etc., but awareness and a desire to 'break the cycle' have really helped to pull me past many of these challenges.

What issues did you face, and overcome?

I was put into a reform school when I was 14 ( like a juvenile prison) and later paroled when I was 15 to a foster family, and then to another family until I was released by the state at 18. My foster parents treated me as their own personal slave.

I'm so sorry Lovinheart. ...I really am but hon I hope you forgive me for what I'm gonna say next............I'm a bad girl I know ...but I just gotta say........................................

HEY all you gals lookin for a BAD BOY....here he is

The following was added after Tinks post....so that's why I didn get no sympathy from her ...she was laughing at the 'bad boy' not me.....I didn want y'all to think she was a heartless meanie ...luv ya Tinks BTW...I do accept delayed compassion

I too went to a foster home when I was 5......we lived with my grandmother a nurse who ran a Nursing Home in Toronto....when she had an accident and closed down the home my mother went back to school and put us in foster care ....when I finally went home I said to her....I think I'll call you Mrs. W------ My poor mother was sooo proud....she finally said years later when I was in my 40's that if she had it to do all over again she would have gone on Welfare instead....Ifeel so sorry for her now but I was hurt and I'm afraid a lot of damage was done...but one good thing happened also....I got to see what a good father and husband was at one foster home....since I had never met my 'own' father.
