Hi, I know there are many nurses on here, because of another thread I was participating in that is now closed. I was going to ask there, but I was too late.
My grandson who was born November 28, 2005 weighed 7 lb. 12 oz. and had no health problems that we are aware of. My son told me he weighs 14 lbs now and is only 2 months old. Is this a normal pattern for an infant to double his weight in such a short time?
My only son is 26, and it's been ages since I have dealt with infant issues. Can someone tell me how old is the recommended age to start feeding them cereal? What about juices? I am just a little concerned that they are giving him too much formula. My son says he doesn't want any water and usually has about 6 oz of formula nearly every 2 hours when he is awake. Should I be worried?
Thanks,
~Elaine~

It would be hard to really say anything IMO what I would do is call the pediatrition and air your questions...and ease your mind...lol but then I am still a student..maybe one of the seasoned nurses will pop their heads in

Try that link. I don't think doubling in two months is too far out of the ordinary for a formula fed baby. My fourth was formula fed and doubled her weight in about the same time (I did most of the feeding, and relied on lots of resources, including WebMD).

I am just curious as I know times have changed and there weren't any 'instructions' that I can remember. I am not looking for medical advice, really. I just wanted an idea of when is the average age to start feeding solid foods and/or juices. He actually has a doctor's appointment today and I am waiting on a call from my son to find out more.

hmmm average age to start food is around 6 months if I'm not mistaken..the digestive system of a newborn still isn't ready...as for juice..I'm not sure..the sugar isn't the greatest for the baby..and the sweet taste is the only tastbud a person is born with..so I would hold off on sweets as long as you can...everything else is a learned taste..

Aselune,
I checked it out too. There is a lot of good information there. I just wanted a second (another) opinion.

I can't help much here.. I nursed all 3 of mine - they all started out about 9 pounds at birth - and all were about 25 pounds at 5 1/2 months..no formula, water, cereal until then.Lets just say I got teased BIG time!!! LOL!!!
The only thing that hit me was not wanting water in between - I thought I rememebr reading that babies on total formal needed some water to help break down the formula. But then again.. like I said.. I have little experience in this! :-)
Enjoy your grandbaby - he is lucky to have such a loving and caring Gandmom! :-)

A little bit more than a nurse, but here's some advice anyways:
Regular general practitioner visits: This way the child can recieve his immunizations (he's ready for his two month needle), have his growth charted and see if he's hitting his developmental milestones. Also, a proper doctor should be doing a complete physical and assessing the child for any future concerns. Finally, a familial history is needed. Any diabetics in your family? Very important on this issue r/t your questions.
As for cereal: we are told that a baby should not have cereals/foods of any kind until he/she is one year of age. The child cannot digest the cereal and cannot get it to the back of his/her mouth.
Formula fed babies have a host of health problems all their own. I could write a book about it. Suffice to say: stay away from iron fortified formula unless your baby has pernicious anemia.
Juice: Never give your baby juice. There is no value to juice for babies or adults. Adults should have at most, 175 mls a day. That's one drink peeps. You miss out on all the fibre and its just got nothing in it, cept some sugar and vitamin 'c'. Ask any dietician about this. One of the big mistakes made is putting a baby to bed with a bottle of juice or milk. This causes dental decay, and is a big area of health teaching in the far north.
I am more interested in his output aka wet diapers than his intake. How many wet diapers in a 24 hour period? How much does he take at one time? Any breathing problems during feeding? (THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT- a babe cannot feed without getting tired if he's trying to catch his breath).
Hope this answers some questions.

there are all new rules of don't do this or that now ......25 yrs ago my son weighted 7& 11.5 at birth...breast feed and at 6 weeks weighted 13 lbs.......then the pediatrician said each week add a new different color of baby foods if no reaction.....
yellow then green and etc....it worked for him and he ate cereal out of a spoon ( very messy mind you) at 4 weeks old at night.....not much maybe a tablespoon or so.....but he sleep all night (10-5).......and as a new working mom it was a nice relief........LOL
so as they said talk to the Dr. but use common sense also.....

Maybe this will help
Remember that every child develops differently. Your child may not be ready until they are a year old. This is perfectly natural and often recommended because a mother’s breast milk or an iron rich formula provides a baby with the proper amount of nutrition during their first year of life. A child will not sleep better as a result of introducing cereal before bedtime, by the way. This is a myth and often why children are started on solids too soon.

Some of the stuff I agree with, some I don't. As said above, common sense is the best guidance.
BTW, my mother thinks the baby should be fed at 6 weeks! She said it didn't kill me, LOL.

Same here with my 28 and 30 year old (went a bit longer before introducing cereal/vegetables with the second one...out of laziness, lol.) Both were weaned directly to a cup as soon as they could drink from one (yogurt filled in for calcium if I felt it wasn't enough milk) And NO JUICE...water-water-water, both while I was breast feeding and to this very day.
Never experienced any allergies or digestive problems or the least tendency to become overweight. I was "MotherEarth" back then, so all their babyfood came directly from my garden or the local butcher (I drew the line, though, at strained liver -- after stewing a batch: PeeeEwwwwie!)
I understand things have changed remarkably in the last 20 years. By all rights, by todays standards, neither of my two should have survived childhood (didn't wear bicycle helmuts, either )

That's what they said I should do when my firstborn was a newborn...he'd have floated away if I'd waited that long to add cereal. Somehow he survived and is a very healthy and even 'ideal-weight' (unusual as that is) adult...I started him on cereal at two months, when 8 ounces of formula wasn't enough to satisfy him. Those babies are all different...and mine didn't care for water either.
But I'm kinda chicken about posting now that I read the ones above me....
