Truly, I can't get over how many people claim a belief of some kind in one God or another. To me, it's so foreign, and I just can't get over it.
I was born (as are all humans) atheist and was fortunate enough to be brought up without religion of any kind, but was left to my own opinions on the existence or non-existence of a supreme being.
Yesterday, someone pointed out to me that it was brave to admit I am atheist. That may be a regional thing, because I've lived in CA all of my life and never claimed to be anything but... and never have I been called brave or brazen for that.
It got me to thinking. Those who claim "no religion," "other," "spiritual but not religious," etc., could just be being vague. It could be that old school of thought where someone doesn't agree with religions, therefore don't practice, which is just a fancy way to say you want to have your cake and eat it too.
So, how many of you are non-believers of anything and afraid to admit it? How many of you claim to be Christian for appearances sake? How many of you just put down a benign answer to that question simply so you didn't have to admit atheism or agnosticism?
Answer here or email my profile. If you email me, I won't mention it anywhere else, that's not my style at all.
~Kay
P.S. Please refrain from references of devil-worshipping, for I don't believe in a devil either.

Interesting thread you have here godless. I am one who lists "spiritual but not religious" My tenet is simple: My spirituality exists within me. The mind/body/spititual connection that I maintain allows for a more heightened sense of self. I do not believe there is a mysterious entity "out there" whether good or evil. The concepts of heaven and hell do not exsist for me, therefore, I am not intimidated by either. To each his/her own....we live in a vast world with many subjective viewpoints...all having merit.

I list myself as an agnostic. I know that I don't know what I don't know.
What I believe to be true/false (one way or the other) may or may not coincide with the actual truth.
That said, some theories are more plausible than others, and some are far less plausible. If it sounds like a fairy tale, it probably is. But I don't know that it is.

i'm a spiritually minded woman, and i've never believed the godstuff my elders tried to make me believe. it just didn't click or make sense to me. my education in religious studies, philosophy, history and my innate intuitiveness helped me to be who i am now. sci made an excellent comment in the threads about origins relating to heaven/hell. some people need that for whatever reason, and they can have it.
i agree with kyky. i have problems when a mouthy minority starts trying to beat up on others because they don't choose to follow what the former believes. labels are ok if they adequately describe who i am by my standard; i dont change myself to fit them.

I hope I didn't come off as a mouthy minority trying to beat up on someone, that certainly is not my intent. I'm just curious to see how many people are actually afraid to admit a non-belief because of majority reaction.

Well, greystone, you certainly have a firm grip on agnosticism and its meaning. Glad you responded.

Other than having multiple posts in a row, nope.
Predictably, when the religious people show up this will turn into an argumentative thread, at which time it will probably be shut down.
But then, I don't know this will happen.

LOL.. silly me, just trying to respond to people. Multiple responses will henceforth be avoided!
No problem about argumentative posters, I don't respond to emotional arguments anyway and would probably remove the post myself if I saw it causing problems.
I don't look at posts addressed to Christians, can't understand why a Christian (or other religion) would look at a post addressed to atheists. *shrug*

why would christians go into a thread for atheists and agnostics- easy. they are whipping religion on us. they can't help it. it is in their training to "help" the poor people that haven't found the lord.

Some Christians--especially the Protestant flavor--see such posts as an opportunity to proselytize.

I believe Jesus is so popular because of how its taught to Christians and how it reads in the Bible. But what Christians fail to reason is the Bible was written by those of secret societies to keep the people controlled. What better way to control people than to get them to believe in a hero or heroes. Now I do believe in a Intelligent Programer but what or how to explain God that is a mystery. I believe God is the Eternal Energy and the source where all energy life originated from. Energy is there even if we can't see it, brush your hair and see the static, etc. As for Religion thats all an add on, but their is some sort of Programmer Energy Source that designed the Universe and its Laws.
