The Texas Dept. of Corrections has a museum in Huntsville, Texas, featuring weapons taken from the general prison population inmates, a history of the famous outlaws imprisoned in Texas, and even "old sparky" the electric chair used to execute those condemned to die in Texas before the law was changed to lethal injection as the new lawful method of public execution in Texas.

There is one guy I saw on TV who is a Texan, and he says: Texas has a death penalty, and we use it. There is even a measure introduced which provides that if anyone murders any person in the presence of three or more witnesses, those convicts go to the front of the line to be executed.

He said: "Some states are wringing their hands about whether or not to execute murderers, but Texas is the only state debating a law to put in an express lane" to death row for those who murder in the presence of three or more witnesses.

Sam didnt try to rescue the Alamo. He knew it was futile.

That's pretty much how I had it figured too. Although I've never seen that in print before. Most historical accounts I'm aware of say that Sam Houston was tooting on his trumpet all the way, shouting "Onward Ho!! But I've just never believed that from collecting some other data. He didn't want to die young, and become a martyr, IMO.

The defenders in the Alamo knew no help was coming

Now, that one I've never heard before. All indications seem to be that they were hanging on by a thread, desperately awaiting the arrival of Houston's army. But you say they knew better all along? How so? Did they know Houston well enough to believe he might leave them hanging?

Yes, he won the battle later. But at quite a price. One could probably charge ol' Sam with cowardice if they really tried hard enough. But instead he got himself elected Governor.

Sam Houston actually told Bowie (he actually sent Bowie to gather the troops, artillery, and burn the fort but Travis talked him out of it) and Travis to abandon the Alamo, but they refused. The Alamo defenders were awaiting reinforcements but were notified by messengers that no help would be arriving. Travis advised the men that no help was coming and that anyone who wanted to leave could go. Supposedly only one man left, the others chose to stay and face certain death, Davy Crockett among them.

Sam Houston is a true Texas hero. He faced disgrace later in life when he opposed Texas' secession from the union (civil war). He fought so hard to get Texas to join the union, that he did not want to see them leave it.

Sam Houston was tooting on his trumpet all the way, shouting "Onward Ho!! But I've just never believed that from collecting some other data. He didn't want to die young, and become a martyr, IMO.

Sam Houston was trying to gather and train an army at the time. It had nothing to do with being afraid to die young or become a martyr, he wanted to win Texas' independence from Mexico....which he did.

One could probably charge ol' Sam with cowardice if they really tried hard enough.

This is ludicrous.

But instead he got himself elected Governor.

Obviously the accounts vary significantly.

But IMO he bailed out on his comrades under fire, most likely because he thought he and his group would likely die as well. (which was possible, but that's the nature of war. There are never any guarantees). All the while the embattled and rag-tag Alamo group held on by their eye-teeth hoping for the arrival of his promised reinforcements, which never came.

Late in the game, they did have an option to leave once it was finally concluded that Houston had turned back, and would never arrive after all. But doing so would be viewed very poorly, and they'd probably never live it down. It would have been turning their back on Texas. So it was either fight, or run away. They chose to go down fighting alongside their comrades.

While we can't be certain that's how it was without being there, in my view those aren't the actions of an American Hero, and I'd give no medals of valor to Sam Houston.

Honestly, if I didn't have to take care of my eldery parents, Texas is one place I would consider moving to.

Been there many times. It's not the most beautiful state, but it has a lot going for it otherwise.

And you are more than welcome to your uneducated opinion.

Keep in mind, there was no "army" in Texas at the time. How long would it take you to gather a group of pioneers and train them into a fighting unit?

Had Sam Houston let his foolish pride take over and he rushed the few hundred men he had gathered to the Alamo, we would all be speaking Spanish in Texas to this day.

Just curious, but what information has led to your conclusions about the Alamo and Sam Houston. Hollywood?

Just use a little common sense here for a minute. If Sam Houston was a cowardly traitor, would he have been one of the most highly respected men in Texas (not only in his time, but to this day)?

Would they have named a city (Houston) and a county (Houston) after him?

Would he have a well established Texas state university named after him?

Surely someone would have figured him out before all this happened?

Come on, spill the beans. What do you know that the entire state of Texas does not know?

Southern man, better keep your head. Don't forget what your good book said.

That song goes through my head every single time I see your name on here.

Absolutely love the song btw... in spite of the political agenda.

Numerous documentaries and written studies of history over many years, as well as being there several times. However I take very little at face value if the writer, producer, etc, wasn't actually on-hand. And none of them were. So its all just 'an impression' of what took place.

Where did your version of events come from?

I feel no particular urge or need to protect this guy's reputation. With others depending on his promise to bring reinforcements to bear, he led his army away from combat to the abandonment of the others there, and left them to either die or run away themselves.

Now if he drastically overestimated what he could do in putting together proper reinforcements in a reasonable time, then I'd consider that his fault as well. Maybe he was just a very poor planner. Or overzealous in his strategy, or his self-confidence. But you don't just bail out.

Any way it happened, IMO many people died due to his shortcomings.

A little Alamo humor.....

Why did Santa Anna only bring 2000 Mexicans to the Alamo?

They only had 2 station wagons

What did Davy Crockett say when he looked over the walls of the Alamo and saw all those mexicans coming?

"Hey, are we pouring concrete today?"

It must have been awesome to have actually been there watching it all going down, first hand, and taking notes on-the-spot.

I am in your envy Sir.

Sadly my own prior incarnations took me to other, unrelated destinations.
