Guess what! The latest profit reports are out and oil companies have record profits. This is probably a surprise to
most of you and maybe you are wondering why.
Maybe: GW Bush is president
He was backed from his governorship to president by the oil companies.
His family made their money in oil.
Family ties go back to Bin Laden's family.
Paybacks are a beech- at least to middle and low income.
Clinton did make some mistakes, but at least he (with the help of a threatened trucker strike) made the oil companies back down in the 90's when they tried to pull the same scam.
What bothers me the most is how it affects the elderly on small fixed incomes.

The answer is simple......
It's called........SUPPLY AND DEMAND.

It's called........SUPPLY AND DEMAND
Supply and demand is not a factor in large oil company profits. That is called greed. Supply and demand is supposed to control price and supply until human influences negate the
whole theory.

"Increasing demand in China, India and elsewhere has pushed the world’s oil production close to its limits, leaving little cushion in the event of a terrorist attack or some other problem that affects production. Concern over those issues has caused traders to bid up the price of crude."
Not to mention Americans unwilling to conserve, thus, contributing to supply and demand.
"The industry says among oil companies that have reported earnings this quarter, profit margins have averaged nearly 9 percent, which is just below the average across all U.S. companies that have reported results this quarter. Exxon Mobil had a profit margin of about 10 percent."
Not a huge profit margin IMO

Funny, ten percent might not SOUND like much, but...
Oil giant ExxonMobil announced its record-breaking profits for 2005 to the public -- $36.13 billion. That is the largest profit ever recorded by any corporation in America.

Seems to me that anything with the word 'non-renewable', as in energy sources, should raise a HUGE red flag. We have an opportunity here, that we seem to be ignoring, to develop alternate energy sources. I seem to hear more about development being done in Europe than I hear about happening here. American ingenuity and entrepreneurship, where are you when we need you most?? Or is it simply that the vested interests in Washington are suppressing research to increase their personal profits, not to mention power?

Ten percent is just that. Ten percent.
Depends on the size of the company. Exxon is a rather large company.
Exxon loves the Bush administration for all they have done for big business. I would too if I were Exxon.

I hate seeing the older folks (on fixed incomes) in my neighborhood taking public transportaion?! I asked a couple of them before why they were doin this? It hurt my soul to hear them say if they had to pay for the gas they couldnt afford the groceries they needed. And when I offered to take them they politely answered no because I have 2 children (they see me running around constanly with them) and I needed to save all the gas money I could.. Or start takin public transportation LoL yeah right... I guess they have the right idea because they all get togther and go on the same day. They say its thier way of conserving. I say its all BS My hubby has to spend over 100 a week on gas alone gettin to work. Can you imagine someone that didnt make much having to spend that much on gas? It wouldnt be worth gettin up and goin to work.

SAVE GAS - ELIMINATE NASCAR
Let them go back to driving chariots.
The highlight of one of the most lauded films of all time was the chariot race in "Ben-Hur."
Two thousand years later, a "modern" bunch of screaming maniacs sit and watch the gas-guzzlers go 'round and 'round and 'round - just waiting for the next CRASH!
Is that "progress?"
Three years ago, I had the opportunity to "visit" the Detroit Eagle - Roger Penske's "boat."
It is nearly Obscene!
And, guess what?
The fuel capacity of that vessel is 12,635 GALLONS.
That is MORE than the total storage capacity of 95% of the gas stations in the world.
Oh sure; it is "needed" to generate 13,000+ Horsepower.
And, guess again?
There are many, many luxury craft that are much bigger.
So, take the first step toward concervation: BOYCOTT NASCAR...
and save a life or two while you're at it.

ONE trip around the track could provide the fuel to get a lot of those "older folks" to the store -
'course that's not as important as watching a fiery crash.
Where have all the flowers gone?

i am not seeing the relevance to oil company profits.
i am perhaps seeing a different agenda.
perhaps someone who dislikes automobile racing needs to take it to a new thread so some intelligent conversation can continue here regarding oil profits.

Since I own quite a bit of stock in the energy sector, I am absolutely delighted over the oil industry's profits.
If you don't own stock in these companies, then shame on you for not recognizing an outstanding investment opportunity when it smacked you on the ass.
Next time, instead of buying pizza make a sandwich. Instead of buying soft drinks, make tea. Instead of buying frozen dinners, make 15 bean soup.
Use the extra money to buy stock. Save. Invest. Profit. That's the American way. Bitch. Moan. Protest. That's the loser's way out.

Not to mention Americans unwilling to conserve, thus, contributing to supply and demand.
Next time you by a house with a drive way, look at how many cars or trucks are there. Everyone in the family that can drive has one. Kids don't want to ride the bus to school, who wants to ride public transfertation? My husband takes a train every morning into San Fransisco. The money it would cost to drive is horrible. Not to mention all the traffice jams every morning!
Ok, getting off my soap box here....

might i suggest some sort of national drive-off day? a day where everyone goes to the gas station, fills the tank, and refuses to pay. what are they going to do? take away everyone in the country's drivers licenses?

Let me know!
I've devised an options straddle for that and I'm anxious to see how profitable it will be.
