Polite boys stand when a girl enters the room, and when she departs. Actually, everyone, regardless of gender, should stand when an elder, or a very important person, enters or leaves. perhapslove would be proud
Boys should open doors for girls.
Girls precede boys through every door except revolving doors. Boys, if you encounter a revolving door when you are walking with a girl, you should enter it first so that you may push the door. (Of course, you should not push it too fast, so that the girl has to leap like a gazelle to enter the revolving door you've set spinning out of control.)
Boys graciously give up their seats on buses, trains, etc., when all the seats are taken and a girl is forced to stand. Simply say, "Excuse me, please take my seat."....(Girls, of course, should immediately thank the boy for his kindness.) Again, the same principle applies to when the elderly, the infirm, the obviously frail, or the pregnant are standing, no matter your, or their, gender.
It is very nice for a boy to help a girl into her coat.
In a bar, if there is no table service, it's nice for the boy to fetch the drinks.
Very old-fashioned, polite boys sometimes order for a girl in a restaurant. Now, if you're going to do this, you should inquire what the girl would like to eat before placing the order with the waitress.
When you are taking seats at a theater, concert hall, movie theater, church, lecture hall, etc., the girl precedes the boy into the row of seats. In a restaurant, when the maitre d' is leading you to your table, the girl precedes the boy.
When a girl is taking a seat at a table, the boy pulls out her chair for her. This is a maneuver that takes a bit of practice to be done gracefully, however. (The EGs have heard embarrassing stories of teenage boys who know they should do this at, par exemple, the prom, but get a bit over-zealous and yank the chair completely out from underneath their poor dates. Not a pretty picture, dear reader.)
i've done some of these when i was dating, and it was fun. btw, further explanations can be found on the website.

I always do all of these. Also, when getting into a car, always open the girl's door first - then walk around the car and let yourself in.

well, pete, how gallant of u! i liked men ordering for me cos they get to put up with the servers who just don't get the order. shame on me, i know.
i always thank anyone who opens a door or pauses at a door for me. i certainly don't want all men to think that every woman doesn't appreciate kindness and manners. i dont mind standing for the elderly, but u know i'm too political to stand for someone "very important" unless i deem so.
thanks to all the followers of chivalry.

mea culpa, gentlemen. back in the day when horses and carriages would spew mud on pedestrians, the gentleman shielded the lady by standing between her and said horse and buggy. our stumbling down memory lane is complete; class dismissed.
pete, i might like them myself. i've been too busy sampling octopus, squid and shark. so, u know the next question -- do les escargots taste like chicken?

I do this also......and it is a great test of the kind of woman you have as well......if, she gets in the car and just sits there.......shes a selfish b*tch........if she gets in the car and reaches across and unlocks your door for you.......shes a keeper.

Just wanted to say how relieved I was not to see a bunch of flaming feminists trash this thread. I miss the days when everyone already knew these rules. And about unlocking his door after he has let you in, well of course. Did that out of common sense and the guy was so surprised. I thought THAT was wierd. (As in, what kind of women are you used to?)

Escargot - typically served in butter and garlic - so they taste like stuff that's served that way... lobster, scampi. Texture is better than octopus and squid.

exactly.dont forget consideration, too, since he did let me in the car first. i miss the days, too, tezra. not all of us are feminazis longing to wear men's pants with a big ol cigar hanging out of the mouth (i have my own britches, ty)
pete, i was tempted until u mentioned lobster. tried it once, and it tasted like butter and garlic. nothing else.

ok, i never give up a seat. never. it is like sharing and that isn't my thing.
i never order for a woman- this leads to trouble(trust me on this) let her order, she's wearing the big girl britches now.
standing when someone enters a room or leaves? what is she, the queen or something? hell no.
a woman trying to find her way in a movie theater- funny. i'll do it. i know where i am going and this violates my "don't let anyone else f_ck things up" rule.
i will and do open doors, help with their coats, and get drinks or food if they ask. i don't "fetch"

Wasn't that whole "if she unlocks the door for ya, she's a keeper" from the movie A Bronx Tale? Hmm...with power locks, a gal doesn't have to unlock his door!
I personally don't like to "precede" a guy. I'd rather get a good luck at him from the back. Plus, if you go first, he's just lookin' at your ass anyway!
I'm into equality. I open doors, do the driving (I prefer to), pay for the ocassional date, etc. I appreciate those things being done for me, so why wouldn't he enjoy the same?

i will however let a woman taste the food at a restaurant first. this way, if it is poisoned or just tastes like dung, i don't have to try it.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with any of that. Good manners etc are something that should be appreciated by both sexes. Some people just take it too far. Then it goes from "equality" to plain old rude unappreciativeness (LOL if that is a word) etc. I think that if everyone practiced a little more manners, and were nicer to each other, even just a little bit, it would go a long way.
