Joe Smith started the day early having set his alarm clock
(MADE IN JAPAN) for 6 a.m.
While his coffeepot (MADE IN CHINA) was perking,
he shaved with his electric razor (MADE IN HONG KONG). He put on a dress
shirt (MADE IN SRI LANKA), designer jeans (MADE IN SINGAPORE) and
tennis shoes (MADE IN KOREA).
After cooking his breakfast in his new
electric skillet (MADE IN INDIA) he sat down with his calculator (MADE IN
MEXICO) to see how much he could spend today. After setting his watch
(MADE IN TAIWAN) to the radio (MADE IN INDIA) he got in his car (MADE IN
GERMANY) and continued his search for a good paying AMERICAN JOB. At the
end of yet another discouraging and fruitless day, Joe decided to relax for a
while. He put on his sandals (MADE IN BRAZIL) poured himself a glass of
wine (MADE IN FRANCE) and turned on his TV (MADE IN INDONESIA), and
then wondered why he couldn't find a good paying job in AMERICA.....

Sooo...True
Many of those countries may dislike us but not our money.
Try getting any of that WalMart crap fixed after it breaks and they either dont have it anymore because it was bought bulk and cheap or its less expensive to just buy a new one.

I've been boycotting our new SuperWalMart here in town but last night I broke down because it's the ONLY department store in town and the only place to get 'normal' things that aren't in the drugstore or supermarket(s) or the few little stores that are left. -- been saving a bundle of money, though and not contributing to the gasoline gougers with 140 mile round trips to either of the two closest cities.

Funny this topic came up... I've been wondering if there's a website that lists all of the companies in the USA that actually MAKE their products HERE!
I also boycott Walmart, in addition to hotels, convenience stores and the like that are foreign-owned.

actually you can shop where you want. By the way, K-mart is owned by Sear now. Target is alien owned. <----- Thats what us people in business call non-american owned and it's also listed that way in my (ABR) american business registry.

It's really hard to determine whether these places are "foreign-owned". MANY are simply owned and operated by foreign-BORN Americans, or at least legal immigrants, tax-paying businesspeople who just happen to talk with funny accents.

I have never been to Walmart myself, so I guess I'm not going to worry about that, but please, tell me Safeway and QFC are still ok. That is where I get all my chocolate!

department stores other than Walmart sell the same stuff you are talking about, that are made in foreign countries, just that instead of paying $50 for it, you pay $30. why there is this fantasy that big department stores, such as Lazarus or Macys sells all American products, is beyond me.
By the way is it Joe's fault that everything is made overseas? Does he own these companies? I do remember in the 1970s, before Walmart became famous and wildly successful, that my Mom bought us clothing and souevenirs that were made in Japan so overseas trade isn't some new concept.

Nope, never tried the pizza. I make my own and can't stand that frozen stuff at all.
And why so surprised about the chocolate? I think it should be declared a NECESSARY food group.

this is a worldwide economy. alot of things will be made overseas cheaper unless tariffs are raised. boycotting a walmart, or a target will do absolutely nothing...except cost more for you to buy something or cause you to do without. if you want action, let your congessmen know that you and the rest of your area want tariff hikes.
i know you are going to say this doesn't work. well, you are wrong. why do you think toyota, bmw, and other foriegn auto manufactures have plants to build cars here in the U.S.?
here is the kicker- if you want prices to be affordable, you have to give up the nonsense of wanting union wages for doing things that chimps and children can be trained to do.

i am talking about grocery store cashiers, regular laborers, fork lift drivers, elevator operators, anything that doesn't require a license to do.
doctors, lawyers, plumbers, electricians- all acceptable trades that require licensing and years of school and training should be able to make a unionlike wage- but the idiot clerk at the kroger that has to get a price check on a can of beets- no f-ing way.

Ok-
Being real here now... Exiled, dear, you are quite young and have no children yet (I peeked). Do you think you could raise a family on minimum wage?
It is in the best interest of America to employee Americans at better than what we have today. If we are paid more, we could cut our losses on those getting welfare, food stamps, WICS, etc. Why would those people want to work for what- six bucks an hour? They also get title 19 and other benefits. They are further ahead where they are. I am not supporting it by any means, but come on-let's make employment more attractive then!
Union (which I am-sorry you disagree with the theory) or non-Union, every American should have the ability to support a family, have good health and retirement benefits. If it takes paying dues and getting active in negotiating, then maybe it would be better to support organizing every company. Keep Americas money here whenever possible. Just a thought.
Who's gonna have the jobs in the future if we don't fight for more? Chimps and children?

the more you get paid, the more inflation raises. one person can't support a family- that's why two parents are in a family. women's lib took the whole one bread winner theory out of play.
at the pace we are going, the mexicans will all be working here anyway. not many people want to even do hard work anymore. they would rather sit in a cubicle and play on a computer. the american work ethic sucks and that is why we are out of the job game. there will always be someplace in the world that can make something cheaper using child labor and paying low wages. the solution is the rise in import tariffs to the point that the market is fair for the country.
