Fact.......or FICTION?!

I've heard for years now that people who drink sodas or other beverages that are in aluminium cans will increase their risk of developing Alzheimer's. Apparently, this is due to aluminium dust that isn't washed out of the cans before the liquid is put into the cans.
Anyone heard of this? Is it TRUE... or a load of crap?

The treatment process for aluminium doesnt allow the consumer to be exposed to dust et. al. The cans are varnished inside and out. What you need to worry about is your anti-persperant. The salt stone and frequent washing is the best aproach to death pits.

On another note. the Naajo nation of Az, hasnt ever had a case of alzeimers. they eat sage in everthing.

From the NIEHS (government) site: http://www.niehs.nih.gov/external/faq/aluminum.htm

Certain aluminum compounds have been found to be an important component of the neurological damage characteristics of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Much research over the last decade has focused on the role of aluminum in the development of this disease. At this point, its role is still not clearly defined. Since AD is a chronic disease which may take a long time to develop, long-term exposure is the most important measure of intake. Long-term exposure is easiest to estimate for drinking water exposures. Epidemiological studies attempting to link AD with exposures in drinking water have been inconclusive and contradictory. Thus, the significance of increased aluminum intake with regard to onset of AD has not been determined.

Aluminum is one of the most abundant elements found in the environment

The significance of environmental contact with aluminum is further diminished by the fact that less than 1% of that taken into the body orally is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.

Due to certain additives, processed cheese and cornbread are two major contributors to high aluminum exposures in the American diet

The average human intake is estimated to be between 30 and 50 mg per day

tomato sauce cooked in aluminum pans was found to accumulate 3-6 mg aluminum per 100 g serving.

What you need to worry about is your anti-persperant. The salt stone and frequent washing is the best aproach to death pits

You know about alum ("salt stone") as a more effective method and material than absorbing all the aluminium found in anit-perspirants? ~gasp~ where DID you come from, sir?!! (LokiBabe, this is getting eerier by the minute )

Oh, antacids are high in aluminum. Safer (and MUCH cheaper) alternative is plain old baking soda and water.

My great grandmother would never eat anything cooked in aluminium but I think it was a combination of the fact that the metal was fairly rare for at least part of her life and she didn't like the taste.

it just proves that the government will give research grants for anything and someone will believe the results.

Another thing with deodorants is that the fragrances can get into your system and cause harm to your liver, and cancers. The best way to stop body odor is to change your diet. We sweat to release toxins. What we put IN us is what comes OUT of us! (one way or another) Studies do show aluminum to be potentially harmful to your nervous system in many ways. But I never heard of the drink can theory.
This is very informative!

Ok, now I'm confused.
"the Naajo nation of Az, hasnt ever had a case of alzeimers. they eat sage in everthing."
I use a lot of sage, even grow my own. And I don't drink anything out of aluminum cans, next to never drink soda at all. So why does my preteen still think mom is a few pickles short of a sandwich some times?

I quit listening to all kinds of bunk years and years ago!!! Hell, if we followed everything that is out there, we'd either die of oxygen deprivation or starvation before anything else could get to us!!! Besides, it seems that 10 years after each new revelation, there's a new revelation that they were wrong!! Death is inevitable. Therefore, I'm going to continue as I have...it's working well so far!!

eyesofblue has a point. we can either fear everything and do nothing but stay home and play with ourselves or we can actually go out and live a life.
