Spousal rape

I was recently arguing with a guy who tried to feed me the line that there's no such thing as spousal rape. His argument was straight out of the old testament and an equation of marriage to ownership. He claimed that marriage was a contract of consent. He then went on to include all females in his home under his virtual ownership. He went off the rails when I pointed out that the Taliban felt much the same way and that perhaps maybe it was time to give up on those archaic beliefs.

I myself am a Christian but I have a real problem with this whole ownership and consent issue and I suspect that most Christians do.

Any thoughts?

I have lots of thoughts but am too disgusted to discuss them. There is nothing right about spousal rape, not to mention it is illegal.

The guy is quite obviously a complete asshole and needs to be sent back to the dark ages with a pickaxe buried deep into his dense skull. IMO.

Rape is rape.

You can take this agruement as far as to physically having in writing that a person can physically do as they please when they please to another person but if that second person ever says no its still rape.

Here's the story that was the genesis of the argument. A man was charged after sexually abusing his wife in her sleep as well as photographing her.

rape is always wrong - and - anyone who thinks being married means you have ownership over the other person belongs in a nut house in a straight jacket sort of thing .

Glad he was charged. I say if it looks like rape, and feels like rape, it IS rape, wether he is your husband or not.

equation of marriage to ownership

This is the biggest bunch of horse hooey I have ever heard. Nobody deserves to be taken advantage of or forced. Ever.

I just hope he doesn't have children. From talking to the guy before I found that he also supports Fred Phelps and his protests at military funerals.

You are right Jankia, but then it would be a violation of his "rights"

In the Bible, it states that a man should be the head of his household, but that he should love his wife as Jesus loves His Church. Rape - no. In addition, having someone be with you, because they wanted to would be far more fulfilling than using force.

First, it is rape if you do not have consent. Period.

Second, she had specifically addressed the issue with him and he continued to do it. So, even though she was asleep, she had already said no.

Maybe big hairy Bubba will teach him some respect when he goes to prison. I certainly always think the punishment should fit the crime.

I'm not even going to discuss the part about ownership... it's THAT ridiculous.

It simply is a matter of consent. If there is no consent then it is rape. It doesn't matter what the relationship between the two parties are.

With respect to the idea that marriage equates to ownership...all I will say that people do not own other people. That ideal, to me, equates to the imprisonment of another person, not so much in a physical manner but in the mental and emotional realms, which is far worse.

Non-defensive force is objectively wrong. All else is subjective. It's that simple.

This is a good example of why I don't belong to any kind of organized religion. They all seem to have some screwy rules, that I just don't think go along with God's INTENT. As far as a marriage license being a deed to anyone, I laughed out loud. People are not property, at least ever since slavery was abolished. The actual question regarding spousal rape, which is no different than any other, especially date rape, illegal and chargeable in this state at least.
As far as the true meaning of marriage, we lost that along with prenups, same sex marriages, do it yourself divorces, open marriage, ...

Let's not blame religion for this. The guy I was talking to only used religion to justify his being a pathetic piece of crap. Not to mention the rules he tried to quote were from a few thousand years ago and are long gone from most religions. People will use whatever is convenient for them.
