VERY generally speaking:
Fire - Fire
Earth - Earth
Air - Air
Water - Water
Fire - Air
Earth - Water
But you also need to take into consideration ALL the placements within a natal chart and compare them against those of the other person. As well as cast a chart for the relationship itself and compare it against the charts of the two people invovled. All of this will tell you oodles about how the two can mix and give clues as to the higher purpose of them being together.
And yes, as a professional astrologer I take it ALL into consideration with all of my close relationships. If nothing else, it helps to truly understand other people and how to speak to them in a way they can readily understand.

ok..this is kind of funny..but i was on a date with this guy i have been seeing. we went to a chinese restraunt where they have the signs on the placemats. well, i was 'safe' cause with my eyesight i couldn't read them..but he read them to me...first he read his. it said that he would marry later in life and would marry a rat. then he asked what year i was born...well i was a rat. my sign said he was a match for me....
should i believe in this or what? do you believe?

I'm Sagittarius, Leo moon, Leo rising. By far most of my friends are fire signs, predominantly Leo and fellow Sag (August and December are tough months, birthday-wise - too many parties!!). I know we didn't become friends because of our birthdays, so I have to assume there's a commonality in there somewhere.
Relationships are mostly fire also, longest one was Aries, with a couple of Sagittarians lasting for quite awhile, but oddly enough the one I'd consider the most serious was a Virgo (but he shares his birthday with Motown and Spongebob - two very spectacular guys).

I've used it for too long to NOT believe, and in my counseling have seen others come to insights that have helped them tremendously. We do have Free Will, so nothing in our charts or the transiting planets "make" us do anything, but what we can do is to learn to work with our gifts and often a chart simply shows us what our hearts have been whispering to us all along. And so by finally hearing it, we can put our lives into more comfortable order and fulfill our "best destiny", so to speak.

I doubt if I would since I`ve never really paid much attention to that kind of stuff...I really don`t see why it would matter all that much..as for the zodiac compatibility thing..that too I haven`t given any thought too...why should it matter if a person matches or not..

A "Card-carrying Sagittarius" here.......with an Aries rising (or so I was told).......an absolute Fire sign.
But I have to admit.......the Fire - Air combo that was mentioned.....I hardly know any Libra or Gemini and only one or two Aquarius. I hang out more with Goats and Scorpios..........love those stingy things!

Had a former girlfriend Pisces and I Scorpion we were by a lot of descriptions perfectly matched. Could not hear each other........struggled staying together......still can't figure out what happened. We are friends still as I am with all formers but can't figure it out.
 any ideas?
