It is possible, a couple of months from now my home will be sold, and I will be uprooting. I plan on traveling for a while and looking for an investment property.
There are several states I haven't yet visited, so I thought I would ask my forum friends to help me out with this.
Can you please tell me, if you could live anywhere in the U.S., where would you live? And why? Please describe the geographics and keep it affordable.

I would live in Western Montana. Beautiful mountains. Don't know how pricey it would be.

I don't know if you've ever been to WV or not Classy, but things are booming around my area and in the next county over (16 miles).
Cost of living isn't that high, pay scale is a little low but they are hoping that will soon change as there are some nice sized companies headed this way in the very near future. Land sales are up and the price per acre is still pretty competitive. As a friend of mine told me the other day.....She's ripe for the picking!!!!!!
Come on over and have a look around!!

Hey Classy... I would ask you what kind of location are you looking for? Beach, mountains, warm climate, hate the snow/rain?
For myself if I could I would relocate to Sante Fe, NM in a hearbeat! It has everything I love. High Desert, mountains and plenty of bare chested native american men running around.
The pacific northwest is an incredible place to live. We literally have it all and the cost of living isn't too outrageous yet. But you have to like the rain!

The house next to me is for sale.
It's overpriced right now but I suspect it's going to come down considerably before it's sold. It's a nice place overlooking the lake but it's just too costly right now. The guy who owns it says he will end up losing some pretty big money when he sells it.

I live in Albuquerque, NM. The climate is awesome, there is mountains, some lakes. But, it depends where you wanna move too. The beach, cold winters, green everywhere etc.

Suburb of Cleveland, Ohio....The North Coast, they call it.
Summertime is great around here, if you don't mind a little humidity. There's the lake with some pretty decent (lake) beaches...boating & other watersports. Several big universities along with a cultural center...Museums, symphony house, etc. There's the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame & Museum... a science center... Old ships & subs... And of course, The Browns, the Indians, & the Cavs!
Along the Cuyahoga River are the East & West Banks...Filled with night clubs, pubs, restaurants...and the occasional strip joint. The MetroParks system is beautiful...trees, rivers, caves, animals & birds.
Then there is winter.
Property costs are low in the city...because no one wants to live there. You pay for a decent neighborhood. Here in Independence, new houses are selling for aprx $190-250/ sq foot.
I am here because my ex was offered a job which moved us from Colorado. Five more years until all the kids are graduated from high school (I hope to God). And the health care jobs are in great demand.
I will be here for five more years.

Well, as a former park ranger, I spent a wonderful Summer when younger in Gunnison, Colorado. It is beautiful and within reasonable driving distance from major tourist draws, such as the Rocky Mountains, Estes Park, and several ski resorts. It is about 45 minutes south of Crested Butte, also a wonderful little town. In 45 minutes you can go from high mountain/desert country with mesas to beautiful alpine meadows and mountains. The town of Gunnison itself was very friendly and accomodating to new people. I loved it!

Thank you all for giving me some great info. I am discovering how finicky I am. I love the desert, but I have lived here most of my life, and I can't handle the hot summers like I used to. I've lived at the beach, and I love it, but most are now crowded and expensive. I've lived in the mountains, near the ocean, and it was foggy and rainy pretty often. It also was quite gloomy under all of the pine trees. Open, sunny meadows sound great, and I know I need some kind of water nearby. I would like to be able to grow a lot of flowers, and fruit trees would be nice.
Then again, if it was the right city, I might consider living someplace that is not my norm. I'm not one for large apartment complexes. I don't need anything huge. In fact, I'm really wanting to downsize, so I would prefer something smaller. It has to be sunny indoors.
I did have West Virginia on my list of states to check out. I had been researching old Victorian fixer uppers on the internet. I am drawn to some of the Southeastern states, but the hurricanes, humidity, and insects are a drawback. I'm still going to take a look at some of them, and I won't be eliminating some of the Northern states either. I've seen some cool homes for sale in some of them.
I know Montana and Wyoming are magnificent, but I don't think I could handle the extreme winters. Probably the most ideal would be to have a winter house and a summer house. Yeah!!! Maybe I'm not being very realistic, but I feel I will know it when I see it.
Hope that helps to give an idea of some of my likes. I'll be mapping out a travel plan soon.

Summer house/winter house?
No, Classy, what you need is is SunBabe's solution -- Summer house, winter BOAT!!
West Virginia sounds very attractive, as does the Ohio/Great Lakes area. I'd've moved there instead of bringing Katt out here, but I couldn't find work in the short time of our courtship.
BTW, I got stuck at the airport in Cleveland waiting on a flight to Detroit one january, and thought I was going to freeze solid trying to get out for a smoke. I'm sure it's a lovely city, but not for someone spawned in the Gulf Stream.

You have just described Leavenworth, WA... In the mountains but with alot of open meadows, clean fresh air, no insects, hurricanes or humidity! Look them up on the web!

Wanda,
Your pictures were awesome. I would like to at least make it your way, even if I didn't settle there. Sure would be a highlight to see some Northern Lights.
What in the world does 'screeched in' mean? Sounds like an initiation. Could it include a little Baileys/Coffee? If there is chocolate involved, I will be knocking on your door.

Hey Classy?? If you're looking for some nice victorian fixer uppers......check out the eastern panhandle of WV...I'll name you a few counties.....Grant, Pendleton, Hardy, Hampshire, and Mineral. You might also do a search in Harpers Ferry WV as well as Charles Town. They have a LOT of older houses in that area and we don't get very much of the hurricane effects in this part of the state. The Potomac River runs right through Harpers Ferry and the South Branch runs through Grant and Hardy counties. Plenty of water sources in this part of the state. I wish I had some pictures to post for you. Anyway, if I can be of any help just send me an e-mail and I'll be glad to do what I can!! Best of luck!!
