As we evolve through this life here on earth, change is inevitable- some is good, some is not. I remember "many" years ago, while walking through a mall, I noticed that the young girls were no longer spinning their heads around to "check me out". It was at that moment I realized that I was no longer a young kid, but evolving into an older man. Disheartening, but, not the end of the world.
There are the tangible things that made life so much more enjoyable. Around the age of 6 or so, one of my parents would send me to the corner store to buy them a pack of cigarettes. At that time the cost was 18 cents a pack (so was gasoline) and they were purchased in the machine. The machines did not accept pennies, so two dimes were put in, the lever pulled and out came the cigarettes.
Still with me? This was the good part. Inside of the cellophane wrapper were two shiny pennies which were mine as a reward for doing the shopping. Up to the candy counter and using wise choices, a little brown bag was almost filled with the penny candy. Walking home and eating the candy was Nirvana to a youngin.

I'm old enough to have seen the last of the soda fountains. It's the result of growing up in a tiny town. Nothing was better than that coke and the 1 cent pretzels at the counter.

The days of walking to town,,and being safe when you did.
Oh ya, going to the Dime store with my mother and it had every thing you needed except grocery's.
Bakery's,,,ones owned by a local family.
When the tooth fairy left me a whole 5 cents!!!!!
It was a real treat to go out to eat. Maybe once a year!!!!!

I remember the arrival of tacobell- 10 cents a taco.. now they're 99... inflation. My sister and I used to get fed everyday for about 50 cents a piece.

Well, I'm older than most of you, but I remember trolleys in NYC, Ebbetts Field, horsedrawn rag wagons, the marble-topped soda fountain with the stools you could spin on, two cents plain, egg creams, 'the Whip' ride that came around during the summers along with the Bungalow Bar truck and the pony rides that did the same.
I really wish I'd grown up here though...I talk to people who actually rode their horses into town and tied them up at the hitching post when they went into the General Store (we had one in Roseboom, in upstate NY, but strangely enough it's STILL there - Bob's Corner Store, with the gas pump in front and the post office in back).

"The days of walking to town,,and being safe when you did."
I think that is one of the things I miss the most. Being able to roam as far as you wanted, just as long as you were back in the house when the street lights went on. Then, after you checked in, and as long as you stayed on the block, you could even go out and play hide and go seek in the dark. I tell the kids of today all the time how sorry I feel for them. These simple freedoms are definitely a thing of the past.

Stewardesses . . .*sob, . . .sniff, . . .wahhhhhhhhh*
No wonder I always prefer to drive rather than subject myself to the "flying cattle car starvation experience" . . .it all began to change when they started calling themselves "flight attendants" . . ..*sob*

LOL I won't even go to a movie theater. Luckily we still have one drive in left in the area, but they did close the one we used to love to go to as kids.

There is a place in Auburn. WA that they still do this every Friday night in the summer time. All the cool old hot rods come out, ladies in poodle skirts, the whole shebang!
