Yep, I hate bad spelling and grammar, although I do try not to mention it because there are other things far more important, especially when just chilling out and having a laugh on here.

I know what you mean, I like to enjoy as much as the next person, but sometimes when reading some posts I am amazed about some of the spelling and grammar. I guess I pride myself with that and I have been told I am a good writer. I just wondered what folks had to say on the subject, that is all. Thanks for your good input as always China.

It gets annoying sometimes, makes me wonder if the person even notices it and just doesn't care or if they are really that lacking in education....the emails, profiles, and posts from some people are really bad in grammar but as stated, I just overlook it. Nobody is perfect. It really has nothing to do with the type of person they are inside.

if you are talking one on one..and they keep the writing like 'r u hr'?? shoot it takes me longer to figure out HOW to say something like that then to type what it really means!
or they write in 'their' own language...

One of the things I'm not quite so compulsive about anymore. I will concede however, that if I have to re-read the first line more than twice, I skip the whole post/e-mail. I make my share of mistakes and don't let other's spelling and grammar mistakes bother me (overly much).
and they keep the writing like 'r u hr'??
My 18 year old daughter types that way. I refused to read her e-mails until she showed me that she really was paying attention during class and threatened to forward her e-mails to her English teacher and demand to know why she was graduating this year if that was the best she could do. Needless to say she spells everything out now and even checks to make sure it is done so correctly. Mean old mama aren't I??

It used to bother me more than it does now. We use chat at work (for work) and I guess we're all pretty anal. If someone made a typo they'd always correct it, no matter how obvious the correct phrase was. I found it bothered me more seeing people correcting the obvious than seeing the typo/misspelling in the first place. I'll occasionally correct someone if they seem to be aware that the spelling might be wrong and include a kweschun (sp?) mark. I've mentioned before that I was born to be an editor (and please feel free to correct me anytime you catch me out!).
One of my first favorite posters on here was Lecriveuse, whose posts were mostly in net ebonics. After awhile it went from an intriguing challenge deciphering them (since they were always worth reading) to being no different than reading 'english'.
All caps is my pet peeve. Spelling and grammar will always be a mystery to some, but anyone can avoid all caps.

I admit to being very anal about spelling and grammar. Nothing turns me off faster than getting an e-mail that I have to decipher. I make my share of typos....my fingers work faster than my brain......but a typo is far different than plain ole' bad spelling.I don't expect perfection in a person, but you won't impress me a bit sending me mail with every other word mispelled and grammar worse than my 10 yr olds.

Ouch that hert below the belt. I need to stand my ground for a moment here. To judge someone bye there spelling is like to judge someone who sounds like minnie mouse.
My schooling did not stop at high school I am one of the few americans who are living debt free and nouthing was given to me. I work in challenging position. And live a comfortable life style.
I did not want to realy give this information out about me on a personal site for reasons, I want someone to like me for me not for what I do or dont have. But please people try not to judge someone on there grammar skills its like judging a book bye its cover I feel. You may be shocked at how many people that can't spell, that are very succesfull in life. I just needed to put a few words in for us ten year old grammar skilled people out here.

I make spelling misstakes myself and I got all A`s in school...is rather lame to be judged on ones spelling...and grammar...since I use the odd non grammatical word every now and then..

Nobody is perfect....but wow....you have to realize the impression of the reader when they see so many errors in spelling and grammar. It has nothing to do with baggage, job, etc. Nothing personal either, because I don't know you. I understand you are defending yourself.... ...Ok I am going to shut up before I get myself into trouble here.

so many errors in spelling and grammar
some people who aren`t experts at typing tend to make a lot of mistakes if they try and type too fast...and perhaps they have other good reasons for not typing too well...but thats just my opinion...

Agreed, Tink....and as I said, nobody is perfect. I should not judge a book by its cover, one of my very own motto's. My apologies to anybody I might have (and probably did) offend with my posts on this thread. English/Grammar was my favorite subject in school (Can you say Geek?)...doesn't mean everyone loved it or that they were good at it. But most could blow me away at mathematics. Enough said.

What bothers me is, you have to know how to spell a word to be able to find it in the dictionary!

yeah i'm one of them. i'm not that good at typing especially when I wanna catch up with others, I tend to make some spelling mistakes but not so often. but does it really matter? the most important part of it is the person inside of me and what i'm about to put through. I don't think it's a big deal anyway cos getting a word incorrectly spelled as a result of trying to type fast doesn't mean i'm gonna pronounce that same word incorrectly when I meet you face-to-face.
I can't brag when it comes to grammar cos i wasn't good at it way back in high school. I just loved FIGURES and finding the x's and y's.
for example most of my I's and the first letters of each sentence here are not capitalized cos I'm having a hard time trying to use the shift button simultaneously with others. itz a helluva of a watse of time. I don't think we're writing a book here. we're just having fun, aren't we? lol

No matter what anyone says, they do make a difference in how a reader forms their opinion of the writer. Typos are easily understood as a simple mistake. However, not knowing the difference between or among their, they're, there, and to, too, two, and my pet peeve, then and than, does tell something of the writer. Punctuation errors are easy to make. No punctuation is ignorance or they just have no respect for the reader. Some people can't spell, but I have read, or tried to read some that my dog could have done better. If the writer knows he is a poor speller, more effort should be made to learn. It makes one wonder if the rest of their lifestyle is as problematic.
