I bite my fingernails, sometimes till it hurts. Is anybody else afflicted with this condition. What's up with it? Know how to stop?

I used to. How to stop... well, I was teased mercilessly because of it. I stopped just so people would leave me alone. Dont recommend that route.
You could try soaking your fingers in a sauce you hate. Every time you went to bite them, you would get a nasty taste.
Or you could cover them with band aids. That worked for a friend of mine.

I do have family members that do it though.

I stopped biting my fingernails one at a time. I started with my thumbnails and moved across each hand. I still bite the nails on my pinky fingers. I guess it's my reward.

Volunteer to clean-up dog pooh at city parks, it will take your mind off biting nails and help your community at the same time. (just kidding)
If that's a bad idea maybe go to a hypnotist.
On a serious note:
I once heard that it has to do with some kind of mineral or vitamin deficiency.
Mango, you should take up this topic on the Health Forum, I believe you will find more answers there.

Is a nail bitter and have been as long as I can remember (hope menopause gets here soon so I forget ). I had fake nails put on but only lasted 3 weeks.......chewed them completely off. I think it's habit and probably a mixture of stress and nervousness (subconsciously)

I believe it's actually falls into the realm of an anxiety disorder. You just need a lil' behavioral modification, Mango! Every time you feel the urge, try running to the bathroom and whacking off instead!

Mango...my former use to do the same thing, he started chewing on tooth picks instead. It took a while to break the nail biting habit, but it worked.

i know that it's not a 'manly' thing to do..but try a set of 'fake' nails. maybe once you get them on they'll look so good that you won't want to chew anymore. yep...i did the same thing...and i have acrylics.
i HAVE seen men at the nail salon having nails applied..so i know it's been done before.

The clinical name for nail biting is chronic onychophagia.Like other nervous habits, nail biting is sometimes a symptom of an emotional problem. In these cases, resolving the underlying problem can help to lessen or eliminate the nail-biting habit.

Since I play guitar, I was thinking of that anyway, at least for my picking hand. My nails just aren't strong enough and if they do get long, they rip, and then I finish the job with my teeth.

I used to do it... stopped after I ditched an SOB bf (talk about stress relief) and started up again about the time I got married (go figure ). I tried putting polish on them all the time, even if it was clear (& I don't like fingernail polish) thinking it would discourage me. NOPE. Sure it tasted awful, but it didn't stop me. I finally gave up on the polish thinking I would die some horrible chemical related disease... at least if I die with a ton of fingernail pieces in my tummy, they won't be polished like I'm a press-on popper or something.
