I am fairly new to online dating and these forums. What struck me early on is that there are so many really interesting people actively taking part on this site. Many if not most will however in an unguarded moment reveal that they are:
1) not really interested in remarrying/seriously dating.
2) that the person they are looking for probably dont exist but just for in case he/she does they will keep on looking.
3) continually keeping their options open to find somebody even better than what is already on offer.
Please help me out here ... what is this site (and other dating sites) really all about?

Well, I think you are partially right.
First of all, there are people here just for friendship, and they've stated that.
There are a lot of us here interested in dating and I think that's been stated in forums or blogs. However, keep in mind, there are usually 1000+ people on this site at any given time but only a small percentage post on the forums. If they aren't on the forums, what are they doing? I would like to think that they are reading profiles and meeting people.
I also know of MANY people who have met through the forums...you just might not have encountered them yet.
hang in there...its great to have new people here and new opinions!

Annie is right...besides theres gotta be friendship before the dating begins, don`t you think..and the forums are a wonderful way of making friends and getting to know someone. And whose to say there aren`t those out there who have met their match or are dating..I doubt very much if their going to broadcast that fact just in case things don`t work out...and there are those who have met and married from this site...as Annie said...and welcome to the forums!

Like the general population, this site has all kinds. There are many reasons why people are on here.
Some are in relationships but enjoy the friendships they've created, so stay on. Others wouldn't mind dating some posters but distance is a problem. Still others just like to express their views and commiserate, but, like you said, keep their options open. A few just like hanging out...lol. There are as many reasons as peebles on a beach.
Also, as far as I know, this is the only free dating site that "also" has a forums section, and some find that very appealing.

In an unguarded moment I will probably admit to being here just for the entertainment. After all I am not going to find anybody living within 2000miles of me on this site. Was hoping to see how other people perceive their envolvement.
There is a little detail which I should maybe have mentioned. I live in Tanzania. The lake visible in my pic is lake Victoria.

 Actually I`d rather work on whats offered..one at a time is enough for me..and once I find that one I cancel out all other options until I see if that One is going to work out..if it doesn`t..then and only then will I reopen my options and continue my search.

what is this site (and other dating sites) really all about?
Pretty much random fun and some dating.
I've tried the online dating thing for about the last 10 years, I have never dated anyone beyond 280 miles (2 women) from my home. Most are all locals. So I consider the dating sites entertainment with the remote possibility of meeting women that I will be satisfied with. But some of the forum topics are truthful and pretty good advise. You'll have to make the call. All I can tell you is that I have never known anyone on a dating site who picked up and moved across states for someone they are interested in. It is a nice fantasy though considering all the beautiful, funny, and intelligent women on the net. I wish I can pick and choose, but that just is not likely to happen.
Just be upbeat and have some fun on here and meet a great local woman.

I am finding most of these so called dating sites pretty much the same. Almost like a shopping trip where you have the choice of bargain brands or name brands. There are a few other free sites that are actually free for everything. However some are moderated almost to the point of a nazi regime and that is how I came upon this site as a freind recommended it as I am a addict to forums. I like to add my 2 cents wherever it seems appropriate and this thread seemed to be the one today.
I have met a few men from my hometown as well as a few that have driven a few hours ( farthest away was 6 hours) to meet me. Nothing really has worked as the distance thing for me is to hard to start out a real relationship. I have resigned myself to the fact that event hough I may not find THE ONE here or elsewhere I can find a few great friends and have a few good laughs as well. I am a single mom and work from home so the circle of freinds isnt what it used to be and this type of thing offers me some adult entertainment that doesnt cost me an arm and a leg for. By being on here we are entertaining the general public I guess but also giving us some distraction from reality. Enjoy your time here and don't place a huge expectation of finding your true love.

I introduced my friend Mike from Boston to this site 2 years ago.. He posted his profile and pic. 3 months later he had gotten into a serious heart to heart relationship with a lady from the Ukraine. Next thing we knew he was on a plane and headed to see her... After staying with her for a couple of weeks they made the choice that they were meant to be... Before I knew it he had went through all the red-tape to get her here in the States... They are now Happily Married and living in FL....

I think that the profiles that are on here, state what each individual is looking for (if they are being truthful) and there are many that come to this site because of the forums and a chance to share their experiences with others or seek advice on other topics.
There are some that are genuinely looking for someone within a reasonable distance that they can share their remaining years with. As my granddad always said, "you never know where you will find someone that will make your heart beat a little stronger, or your smile a little broader, you just have to keep your options and your heart open to all the possibilities".
In the end, we all make our own choices and there are some that have found that special person to share all life has to offer. Yay, for them! To all those still hoping.. never give up... hope is what keeps dreams alive!

For some of us, that's a bonus -- definitely intriguing, coupled with your other "attributes" 
(Unfortunately, our "philosophies" differ  , but for you, despite distance/location, I have no doubt you may find a partner here. Meanwhile, enjoy the 'entertainment', lol -- I was one of those not "actively looking", btw, and discovered my eternal "soulmate" through MD forums. Distance worked itself out somehow, just because it was "meant to be"  )
