It's a bright sunny afternoon and I am strolling home after a long day at work when I notice one of my neighbors carrying a tank of herbicide and spraying it on every dandelion on his lawn. I successfully suppressed an impulse to deck him and apply a few squirts of herbicide to his face--the idiot was probably unaware that soil cannot purify chemicals and hence he was contaminating our groundwater for no valid reason--but the incident made me wonder yet again about a question which has bugged me for many years.
Why do people hate dandelions so much?
A dandelion is not kudzu. It's a flower. A beautiful flower that only blossoms for a few weeks and then vanishes. To the best of my knowledge, it does not harm any other plant and it brightens many a lawn which otherwise be a bland uniform green. I really just don't understand why so many otherwise intelligent people waste money, time and energy trying to kill an essentially harmless flower.

Get him back. Plant some kudzu in his yard. Proper growing conditions - kudzu can grow a foot in 24 hours and is almost impossible to get rid of.

Edible as well. Personally I just mow them or yank them up by the roots from my flowerbeds.

When that beautiful flower dies its ugly as hell and produces umpteen thousand seeds that are quite unwanted in gardens. The only herbicide that contaminates ground water is atrazine, its not used just for killing dandelions because it kills grass and anything that grows. You cannot buy it anymore without certification in its use.

He was an old geezer. I am pretty sure I could take him, but my Daddy taught me that it is not honorable to beat up an old geezer.

But that is precisely part of the point. You can't possibly kill every dandelion in the neighborhood and it only takes one to fertilize the entire neighborhood, so why bother?

My brother said "You can do that to old men now Jon,your old too!

This is to funny as just now I went outside and witnessed my new neighbour on her hands and knees cutting out her dandelions while my yard has a ton of them. Hey, I can't afford weed killer and the kids love picking "flowers" for mommie so Im leaving them there. It 's the only flowers I ever get!!!!

I looked out my window Easter sunday and my yard was not only full of dandelions but small purple violas also. All that purple and yellow was gorgeous and no way was I going to run out there to kill em. Guess beauty IS in the eye of the beholder!
