Yahoo messenger ID and passwords compromised

On june 9th, I was on the internet with my Yahoo IM in the back ground turned on. A message popped up suggesting that one of my contacts has just come online.

I responded with a buzz and greeting message, only to find out later, (several general questions) that it was an imposter that was using my contacts name and avatar picture. They later claimed that they had been given permission to use the ID and made several false statements about that contact and misrepresented themselves several times.

I called the contact and they confirmed that their messenger had been compromised and that their entire friends lists were erased.

On both Yahoo and MSN e-mail services I have received notifications from contacts to SEE MY NEW PROFILE It is my understanding that this message contains a program that accesses your address contacts and downloads them to the spy when you click the view button.

In the 90's I had heard that I you download some forwarded E-mails with several hundred names on them and you are asked to forward it to others that it is all those e-mails are sent back to the embedded originators e-mail. (originator being one of the names on that list).
Sorry to tell my friends on here that E-mail me that I don't ever open forwarded e-mails, so please don't send them with other personal messages attacthed because they go directly into the trash

Is anyone else experiences these nasty hackers and hyjackers?

Do a google search on this subject. My contact is Mad as Hell and wrote a letter to Yahoo.

Jerks like this ruin it for everyone http://www.beahacker.com/bah.htm

I haven't had any problem with the Yahoo IM but a few days ago I got several password reminder messages from Blogspot in my e-mail. The problem is that I never asked for a password reminder.

I assume someone was trying to hack blogspot.

Personally I don't see the thrill in hacking for the sake of screwing with people.

This is why you install a good antivirus program and keep it up to date.

It really is maddening to spend so much money on a computer, and you have to guard it from those who have no concern, or respect for your computer activities.

If they want to prove how good they are, why don't they hack into some of the terrorists networks we hear about.

I have always thought that someday with the conveinence and necessity of using a computer they will also be our "downfall". We have put too much info on the internet, for an example, just how are you paying for your ISP? Let me guess, with a credit card or God forbid, an auto deduct from your checking account? Have you been to a bank lately to open a new account, CD, or straighten out a problem? They ask you everything except your bra size (and that will probably be coming next). I don't care how much anti-virus or firewall protection you have, there will always be some way, eventually, to get to that so called "secured" info. Look how many breaches there have been in our military "secured" computers already for an example. Scary.......

I have had those problems in the past... I now protect my computer with Zone Alarm and another program that protects my instant chat programs as well.

Out of courtesy to my friends, I never EVER put any of their personal information (ie real names, phone numbers, addresses, etc) in any "public"/web-based email programs address book. I also remove any passwords/account info from those mailboxes immediately -- after experiencing a Yahoo account being hacked by a person (not a bot) who changed all the information so that I could NEVER get back in.

there is no safe info anywhere.... I found out recently that the VA had an employee take home a copy of all of the file information about any Vets discharged after 75', it was stolen, and now medical records, pension records, personnel files from the military.... etc... are all out somewhere... so now I have to watch all of my financial records, because my SSN is in that stuff as well....

This is EXACTLY the reason that I pay ALL of my bills IN PERSON, IN CASH, and I get a receipt!!
It's just like "mednurse" said.. people are WAY too lackadaisical with what they put on the internet. That's also one of the reasons I don't "pour my heart" out in these "blogs" on a daily basis! Granted, I DO put nothing but silly crap on my blog! FLIBIDEEFLOO!!
BTW, look for "lackadaisical" to be my "word of the day" real soon!

DoorWatcher -- I had people tell me that too, but later found out that yahoo wasn't disconnecting properly when I logged off. No one had gotten in under my name, was just a "technical glitch".

The forums section of my business website was totally wiped out by hackers. Luckily they couldn't get into the secure portions, but the forums along with several years of postings are gone.

I don't chat but I do have msn messenger on for my daughter.. I think yahoo is the worst by far. I won't even download if . It's prone to hacker's. I agree that a good security system is your best protection.

Many years ago I was talking to a friend on yahoo IM and some idiot joined our chat, he wasn't invited (and certainly wasn't wanted), and wasn't known by either of us. How weird is that?

Annie--- I have had that happen to me several times.
I leave my messenger open during the day at work, when I leave, I log out.
I have had people tell me that I was online that night, when I wasn't.
Yahoo needs to beef up on some of there securities.

the thing is, the average user is computer illiterate to the most basic elements and will click on or open about anything that they get...and i don't say this to be ugly but as just the truth of the facts...most only know how to turn it on, get there mail, surf the web and nothing else...you are the one that is responsible for your pc and your passwords....any and all can be hacked and the odds are sooner or later they will be.....

the hackers( and the actual meaning of a hacker is not what you think.....i should say the script kiddies) only go after what will get them the most hits so they hit the most popular sites, OS, browsers and IMs .....think about it, how many people use a certain program a day and how unknowledgeable are they about the technology they are using?......you are only as safe as your knowledge allows you to be and throw in your contacts knowledge also that send you emails and junk.......would you give them all keys to your house?......well your personal information on your computer is just that keys to you......so use and keep a secure system and passwords and change the passwords often and don't be so curious if something looks odd delete it and be safe rather than sorry.......
JUST my 2 cents........
