Everytime i visit the US, this so called tipping disturbs me. It's because in Japan receiving tips from a customer is considered a crime. So to speak, tipping is prohibited in Japan. I often wonder why i have to give tips wherever i go here in the US and people seems to expect it. I don't mind giving tips but only when i'm satisfied with the services. But what about when i'm pissed with the services? Will that make me a criminal if i don't give tips? I knew Americans are already used to tipping but us foreigners find this custom somewhat strange. I wonder what the citizens have to say about it.

the worst part, is the government taxes the tips... they automatically withold taxes for a tip of 15%... so if we tip less because of bad service... the government taxes them for more than they really made....

most waiter/waitress make less than $3.00 an hour plus tips......custom is 15-20% if your service is good....if the food is bad they have nothing to do with what goes on in the kitchen so why would you punish them.......also most others that work for tips work at a reduced rate and their lively hood depends on those tips besides minimum wage at what is it $5.35 hour is a crime not tipping if you ask me ..... i see nothing wrong with tipping more or less than the customary depending on the service given.....
besides if your food is bad ask to see the manager and he usually will make some compensation for it.....this is something i have rarely done but it does happen

no, it's considered that they will make tips and then they are required to pay the taxes on those tips as well as their salary........

That's ridiculous... how tips can be "considered" to be part of a salary (in the view of the employer) would be illegal in the UK, employers are required to pay the minimum wage themselves. Although in the UK tips are also required to be declared as earnings and taxable, although most places don't bother with that.

nah is right. Where I live I think they make about $2.16 ( the best I can recall )
an hour.
My daughter has been a waitress in food services and also a bartender.
If it wasn't for her tips, she would of never made her bills.
I always tip my waiter/waitress if I am pleased with their service. If I have a
complaint with the food... I take it up with the manager on duty. If the waiter/
waitress tries to correct the problem, then it's not their fault and I do tip them.

yes it is ridiculous... that's why i'm almost always a heavy tipper.....
besides some places make them share their tips with the busboys, manager on staff, bartenders and so forth.....yep, now that really stinks......

I suppose you also have to bear in mind that eating out (for instance) is much cheaper in the US than it is in the UK and, generally speaking, waitresses and kitchen staff pool and share all tips.

I STILL don't understand how the food service industry manages to be exempt from the minimum wage law...and SO far below minimum wage, at that!
Yep, "pooling" and "splitting" tips among ALL the service employees is becoming more common...even in casinos.
It's definitely "UnAmerican"
Sometimes, in some areas with a large number of international visitors, SOME establishments state that they automatically add a 15% (or 20%) "gratuity" to the tab...but it's not legal to do so everywhere. (My son waited tables while at the university in D.C. He felt "stiffed" -- to put it politely -- after serving a 3 hour meal to a table of demanding Kuwaiti's, which included $400 bottles of wine -- yeh, right they don't drink -- they ran up a $1200 tab! ...and they left him a five dollar bill on the table -- which he had to share with two busboys!! )
Yeh, so please tip...or waitstaff won't be able to even drive to work anymore.

I worked as a server, and believe me, they EARN those tips. I made $2.02 per hour and was taxed on 10% of my sales whether I made that much in tips or not. At the end of the evening, I had to tip-out the bartender 10% of any alcohol sales regardless of if I was even tipped on those sales.
I always found that Japanese businessmen usually had high bar bills and tipped very well. They must have gotten beyond the "its a crime" mentality, lol.

Sleeping Beauty.
It's a cultural custom so having observed the difference you need to adjust accordingly. When you visit the States, tip and tip generously. When in Japan, don't.
I've travelled to many different countries and what all the other posters said is true. Especially it would seem in cities where there is a great deal of tourism. My last trip was to Florida. Our suite was located a fair hike from the main entrance so we could call for a "transport" which was basically a very elaborate golf cart ( that seats 6 plus baggage) to bring us to the main lobby. I would talk to the very hospitable staff who operated these "carts" and they earned less than $3.00 an hour. I tipped every time.
Why? I've been a server and you do depend on your tips. Even though here in Canada we got minimum wage, which was $6 ? an hour you still needed your tips to survive.
And sadly enough? Most women tip very poorly but this was my experience. When I go out I tip very well for good service.

I too have been a waitress.
It is hard work too. There were times all I wanted to do was stand and scream at some of the rudest people I have ever known.
I will say, I would not serve the food if it wasn't right. I made sure everything I was getting ready to put on the table was the way they ordered it. If something wasn't right, I told my customer there would be a slight delay because I wasn't satisfied with what the cook did.
Really satisfied with the food??? Don't forget to tell the cook too. Even if you don't tip the cook, it is wonderful to hear from a customer that they loved what you cooked.
Pay the tip.

I too have waited tables and bartended b4 and well DEPENDING on the service from the server is how I tip... lately the RUDENESS with which some servers attend to thier customers is appallling.thier surly attitudes and impatience irritate the heck outta me i have walked out on more than a few restaurants even b4 my order has been taken BECAUSE of the attitude of the server .oh btw I was like Katt always made sure the customers food drink etc was what they ordered and if something was wrong fixed it IMMEDIATELY and well always had the lions share of the tips... now that my daughter just started working (her first out of the family PAYING job) I sat her down and reminded her if it wasnt for the customers she wouldnt have a job .. which holds true for ANY profession..BUT that she did NOT have to put up with overly rude customers either THAT is what management is for and god forbid if some fool tries to grab her theyll end up on the floor more than likely just outta reflex actions (daughter is a black belt in kungfu ) I know a few guys damn near lost thier hands grabbing me when I was waitressing... but back to the tipping.. if the service is good or passable yes tip if its horrible (now take into account volume of customers etc.) then either leave a minimal tip or none...BUT if the service is wonderful or above average yes OVER TIP cause every little bit helps....

I guess my tip would be to get your A$$ in school, finish it, then plan to make real money when you graduate. Don't be a bottom feeder.
Buy a restaurant so that you can pay your employees chump wages and watch them pretend to like their jobs while they are spreading bad rumors amongst themselves and try to back stab each other because they are miserable and disgusted with their livelyhood choice.
P.S. don't spit or rub my hamburger patty around the trash barrel just because I'm trying to give you a tip

well striving I am 50 years old but I did go to college but found i hated working in medical offices or doing transcription.. and love what i do now in medical telecommunication.. I am a state employee but the other day a study said its a shame that state employees make such a wage that we can qualify for social services etc and the medical insurance is so high that you have a choice eat or have medical coverage.. and with me being a diabetic i chose the food .. and i dont consider myself to be a BOTTOM FEEDER.. Hm then who would wait on you at a restuarant Striving?
Who would cook the food for you when you went out to eat?
I take pride that have have been the best darn waitress and cook I could be,
I take pride in the food I have cooked for many, many people.
Go to school? To cook? Ya,,maybe it would have been nice, if I would have had time in between raising children, cooking and feeding my family, and working at the same time. Something had to give and I guess school was the farthest thing from my mind.

Don't be a bottom feeder.
Since when are people who SERVE OTHERS bottom feeders? The majority of people I worked with in the restaurant industry took pride in their work and worked their butts off daily for those tips serving arrogant people who make comments like that. I learned something else then too...you can tell a lot about a person by the way they treat the wait staff, including the type of tip they leave. Something tells me you expect top-notch service but leave a lousy tip for it too.
