Now thats funny!

Newfie's to some, myself anyway is a term used to name Newfoundlanders. A term of endearment, some use it with pride, others find it an insult... to each his own I reckon!

Mummers... are folks that go out "mummering" An old Newfoundland tradition, with roots mostly from Ireland (I believe) where folks get dressed up in disguise going around from house to house, singing Christmas songs (and others) having a few drinks and most likely a couple of dances! Just plain old good times and fun!

Hey school2

As wandaful says, the term "newfie" is a slang to describe Newfoundlanders. Personally I take it as an insult because non-newfoundlanders (specifically canadians) use it as a derogatory term - much the same as another "N" word was used to describe black people

Not to get tooooo political here, but there are a lot of us who believe that joining canada was a mistake that needs to be rectified ASAP. We were once a strong, proud nation. Free Newfoundland!!!

Mummering is a very old English/Irish tradition. Many places still have mummers parades around Christmas time. (I think Philadelphia has a very big mummers parade) Newfoundlanders modified the tradition by adding costumes to hide their identity and going from home to home for drinks and dances. It works because we are Newfoundlanders Can you imagine anywhere else in the world where a group of people - obviously disguising their identities - knocks on your door late at night... and you invite them in and offer them a drink and a dance??? LOL
