We drove it on a family trip back in 1969 - wow, that makes me feel old. It was hell. Nothing but rain, mud and pot holes. Back in those days it was dirt and only used for trucking and the new highway wasn't open yet. We had to stay in our van for 3 days and 3 nights - now I know how Noah felt. We drove up the highway but took the fairy back down. It was either that or have to put a new set of tires on the van.

I know it has changed a lot since then and I would love to go there again someday.

The Alaska Highway is now a beautiful (by Canadian standards) all-weather highway. It has received large infusions of cash for improvements (mostly from the U.S. Government, believe it or not) every year for quite a long time. It is paved the entire length, although in the summer there are frequently sections being resurfaced. The only part a bit curvy is the section between Stone Mountain Provincial Park and the north end of Muncho Lake. Most sections are well built, and have easy visibility to pass the numerous motorhomes. The one drawback to the highway is that there are no extra passing lanes north of Fort St. John. This makes it difficult if you catch up to an extra wide load such as a mobile home being moved. I guess it's only really a problem if you're a speed demon, because even those are often moving at 100kph.

We drove up the highway but took the fairy back down.

Was said fairy thankful for the ride?
