Where have the good shows gone? The only major network that carries anything halfway original anymore is the WB? Are the writers on strike or worse...had a massive wave of strokes?

I prefer to watch shows that are not based on watching people be greed and ignorant. I can only watch the learning and history channels for so long until I end up having every show memorized.

I think it is a combination of factors. To begin with, there are so many different networks and so many different shows now that producers can't possibly find enough talented writers. Most writers tend to specialize in any case: Some are better at horror, others prefer romance and still others have a talent for comedy. It is rare to find a writer who can excel in more than one speciality. Another problem is that the networks can't afford to experiment anymore. Production is so expensive and so complicated that networks don't want to waste resources on any show that is not a guaranteed hit. (This overlooks the fact that most of the good shows were rarely a hit immediately.) Our expectations have also increased: Nobody would watch such a lame show as "Father Knows Best" today, for example. Last, but not least is the fact that Hollywood has much more competition now. There are still newspapers and books and now there is the Internet with all of its opportunities. I think it is fairly safe to say that the Golden Age of Television is over.

I agree...I barely watch tv anymore. There are two shows I make a point to watch every week and they are Lost and House md. Very good shows. I also love ER and CSI.
And I also want to point out how awful kids shows have gotten as well. It's like they've lowered the expectations of how smart younger kids are today...I mean come on....boobah? oobi? They aren't even real words. What happened to fraggle rock and gummy bears and the non dumbed down sesame street? Gosh even barney is acceptable compared to some of todays shows.

We now live in an MTV-influenced world. I don't blame violence on it but I can point the finger at them when it comes to the dumbing of society. The reality show boom came from them(Real World and Road Rules) and music...well, forget that.
Just remember this- the first music video on MTV was "Video killed the radio star" and guess what- it did. Welcome to world where you have to look long and hard to find decent music. It will not come from your television and probably not from a radio any time soon. Time to quit my rant here and continue listening to the "White Album"

Chatting and/or message boards are much more satisfying than television anyway. At least there is some actual human interaction! I only watch 2 tv shows. My guilty pleasures: Nip/Tuck and Desperate Housewives.

i'm like u, rare. i dont bother to look at network shows. we all see remakes because people dont have talent and creativity anymore. in the days of the hays office, people had to creatively write and produce about life without getting slammed. now, literally anything goes.
law & order was my favorite for a long time. now it's gone through so much garbage that i rarely watch it. i do love discover and a&e for forensics shows. and i wish they'd show donna reed again. i can only take so much of that little idiot beaver.

Just maybe with the cost of living so much higher nowdays actors and actresses are no longer being hired and new movies are at a slower pace being made. So to fill in space Reruns need to be shown. Take the X-Files, now I still enjoy the reruns but no longer are they making any new series, why not? Is Hollywood going broke?

We should all be out having fun and getting exercise instead of being stuck in front of the tube, anyway, exiled.
(as I readjust the comfy chair at my computer and continue typing for hours...lol)

I quit cable completely (well, satellite) about a year ago. I called, told them there was nothing worth watching, and they wouldn't let me cut it off...just kept offering me discounts and transferring me to different "customer satisfaction" departments. I tried to explain that even at $25 a month, the lineup still sucks...
Anyway, now I call them every four months and tell them I'm leaving the country. My service is suspended indefinitely! I haven't missed it at all, either; I can get news online, and NPR makes great listening, too, if it's just a matter of background noise.
You gotta stand up to the man!!

I don't watch much tv, most of it is junk and when I do watch tv I'm happy with the 4 channels I do get lol. Cable and Dish prices around here are rediculous don't know why anyone would pay those prices!

gee, danae, i could've told u to stop paying the bill. they'll get it cut off quick, fast n yesterday.
i'm buying the sort of stuff i like to watch on DVD (older movies n tv shows). i'm usually on the puter reading and yakking, but sometimes i'd like 2 watch "all about eve" or "dead ringer" 4 the umpteenth time. it's like watching it 4 the first time all over again.

Yeah, but it's kinda like that old ex that lots of people keep, around but on hold...you might want it someday, for something
Hey, I got hold of copies of the entire run of Hill Street Blues! Now, I only remembered bits and pieces (I was pretty young when it ran) but I can honestly say it's the best serial I've ever seen. And I don't usually care for legal-system shows that much...

I can't stand all the commercials nowdays on television so I prefer to rent movies instead. The commercials are far toooooooooo many and it seems they take as much time as the program does. A good movie needs little distraction and thats exactly what commercials are doing to me. Sure they pay for the show but why do they take up so much time and golly sometimes we get 5 in a row before the show returns. I think these commercials are actually making people want to watch less of tv. Maybe movies at the Theaters should make a come back.
