I'm sure you don't have to think about my answer but I enjoy Steven Spielberg as well as George Lucas....
I give George Lucas a lot of credit for not letting the studios hold him down and for paving the way for many young aspiring filmmakers.

I just watched "The Magdalane Sisters". It turned my heart 'upside down' so much that I stayed awake all night and morning. Based on actual events, girls in Ireland (1960's were placed into "Laundries" to work very hard to cleanse themselves of their sins. Some girls were placed there just because they were too pretty. It was a prison. The acting in this film was fantastic. I highly recommend it.

Right now, Alfonso Cuaron is my favorite.
I absolutely LOVED Harry Potter 3 and Children of Men. Something about the style and tone was just fantastic.

Tim Burton. Dynamic cinematography, a willingness to take chances, and scenery rife with psychological background. He's the Hitchcock of the modern era.
The only thing I don't like about Burton is the emo kids that attach to his work, liking it just because it's dark. Emo kids ruin everything. >_<

There are so many great filmmakers. George Lucas Tim Burton Martin Scorcase (sp) Richard Donner Sam Rami James Cameron George A. Romero Roman Polanski
The list goes on and on and on... so it easier for me to list my least favorite filmmaker... ok make it my most despised filmmakers....
Michael Moore Quentin Tarantino
Ok.... so there a lot more that have not made that list.... I just cannot pull their names out of hat.... lol

A lot of Tim Burton's latest work, I think...is terrible. Across The Universe looks good though.
And Quentin Tarantino is disgusting. He should be observed in isolation for a long time.

Just realized that my 1st post here did not answer the question.
My favourite Film-maker is David Lynch.
If you are the type of person that has seen so many films that you know how the formula of the movie is going to take place before it is over- Watch some David Lynch films. They are *different*.
George Lucas asked David Lynch to direct 'Empire strikes back' and possibly 'Return of the Jedi'. David Lynch told Lucas, "George, this is YOUR movie, you have the best thoughts for it, I really think you should Direct it!"
Woody Allen said 'blue velvet' is one of his all time fav's. Stanley Kubrick said 'eraserhead' is 1 of his all time fav's.
Some of David Lynch's movies are a bit uncomforable to watch (elephant man, eraser head) - but the bulk of his work is THOUGHT provoking beauty.
I highly recommend: Twin Peaks (both movies and the T.V. episodes). The Straight Story (it's rated *G* Mom!!!!) Mulholland Drive (the most difficult to understand movie ever made- but amazing) Blue Velvet Dune (for all you sci-fi nuts out there) Wild at Heart (nicolas cage/Laura Dern) Inland Empire (his latest) Lost Highway TV series comedy "On the Air"
