BTW, what classifies Star Wars as fantasy and not sci-fi? I'm not really proficient in the genres classification area.

It's not. There is sci fi influence in it for sure, but it's been defined (by Lucas, btw) as a "space opera fantasy". What makes it so is its plethora of connections to myths and archetypes that are used over and over again in fantasies. It's a science fiction fantasy, I suppose you could say.
Plot Elements in Fantasy movies/books....all clearly involved in Star Wars:
# Quests, both internal and external. # Struggles between good and evil, light and dark, or law and chaos. # Coming of age. # Heroism.
Quests help the characters to grow as they strive for an object or ideal. The struggles between opposing forces are to achieve or restore balance to the world. Themes of heroism and coming of age bring about growth in characters. Other themes appear in Fantasy but these are the major ones.

Agree about the fantasy element, but I would think Star Wars could be thought of as both sci-fantasy “and” sci-fi (as many movies can). There are many strong sci-fi elements present throughout the story—alternate reality (takes place “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away....", a huge emphasis on advanced technology and elemental science, etc.
Science fiction is largely based on writing entertainingly and rationally about alternate possibilities[2] in settings that are contrary to known reality. These include: * A setting in the future, in alternative time lines, or in a historical past that contradicts known facts of history or the archeological record * A setting in outer space, on other worlds, or involving aliens * Stories that contradict known or supposed laws of nature[3] * Stories that involve discovery or application of new scientific principles, such as time travel or psionics, or new technology, such as nanotechnology, faster-than-light travel or robots, or of new and different political or social systems [4] Source

Of course, but if the creator specifies it's not sci fi but is fantasy, how can you make a case for sci fi?

For the reasons I touched on above. Maybe Lucas thinks of it as "strictly" fantasy (which I would dispute), but most sci-fi writers and critics believe it also qualifies as sci-fi. The movie is continually placed in the top ten Science "Fiction" Best Of Lists, and in this instance I'm going along with the general consensus.

I'm going to stick with a fantasy that has science fiction overtones =) The heaviest themes in the saga are most definitely geared toward the fantasy genre, but yes there are definitely sci fi influences.
