Is "Flowers in the Attic" a good book?

We all know "Flowers in the Attic" as "the book where the brother and sister get down". But is there any merit to the book beyond that? Is the book significant only for its shock value, or for something more profound? It's been on my reading list for a long time, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

At one time, it and all the rest of the books were very hot.

Flowers in the Attic...i think it is more about psychological torture....
The children are really used as an experiment...do we really need sunlight or human interaction to stay sane? Think of all that those children had to deal with...could any of us stay in one room day after day, month after month with nothing to do? Wouldn't it drive anyone crazy?

In the movie, the grandmother was played by Louise Fletcher, oddly the same actress who played Nurse Ratched in the movie "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest"

It depends on who you ask. It was a very popular book during the late 1980s and early 1990s. My brother used to say it was one of his favorites, but he wouldn't say that now. It doesn't sound like a very wholesome read to me, but it might be worth taking on a boring bus ride or something. I remember the book now, based on what other people are saying. Don't read it. It's completely pop culture rubbish.

So I found it in the library recently and read it. I thought it was actually a pretty good read. The writing style was annoying at first, and the characters were flat (especially the younger kids). But the story! Fantastic story, and the characterization of the mom was excellent. She goes from happy to despondent to greedy to self-serving to... I won't give away the ending. But I really enjoyed it. The incest anglle wasn't all that important, honestly; it just showed how lonely and desperate people can get (especially when they're horny teenagers). Thanks for your responses.

A classmate in junior high was reading it--I never read it, but she did tell me all the details of the book in the bathroom at recess. lol That's what I remember of it. It was a big deal back then, her reading a book like that, because everyone knew the adults...the teachers, principal, her parents..didn't want her to be reading it, and for the rest of us hearing it. I remember thinking, 'wow, this girl's a rebel' when I was like 12. lol Her name was Joanna, now that I think about it. But that's how junior high was...doing and reading things we knew our parents wouldn't like. lol She read that book, Go Ask Alice. I know there's a movie, and I never did read that book. VC Andrews was very popular back then.

I liked that series. (That was ages ago! ) Didn't know those were still around. Not about incest...about child abuse. Their coping mechanisms. Going through adolesence having onlly each other.
