Well, Burns, I haven't paid for TV for the past eight years, and don't miss it a bit.

I used to get (until about three weeks ago) all the network channels and UHF stations for free over my indoor amplified antenna. I finally broke down and bought a HDTV three weeks ago, so now get all the channels on digital TV...still free and over-the-air. Most stations are Hi-Def, too, and I can't tell you how good they look.

The average monthly cable/satellite TV bill for most people with the basic package over the last eight years is about $35. For me, that would work out to a savings of $3360. This month the local rates just increased by 3 - 6%, so now most people are going to average $40/month, which works out to $480/year. Every month I go without pay TV just increases my savings, which has been more than enough to pay for the TV I just bought, a good surround-sound system, and even a bigger TV if I decide to get one for my living room!...lol. If I want to see a movie I just rent one of go to the local cineplex (most movies I'd prefer to see on the big screen, anyway...not that I go to the movies a lot).

Just can't beat the savings.

Try $60...!!...and that is just for basic cable....it's ridiculous...but in order to have the reception that we need to even enjoy some of what goes on on television...that's what we have to unfortunately pay....Highway freaking robbery!!

$60 at 12 months over eight years would work out to $5760, Dazee. That'd be enough to pay for.....

Pioneer - KURO 50" 1080p Flat-Panel Plasma HDTV

Sony - BRAVIA 1000W 5.1-Ch. Home Theater System with 5-Disc Upconvert DVD/CD Player

...and still have money left over.

Now that's "really" sumpin' to cry over.

Kisses back

I don't think most people realize you can get basic channels (networks like ABC, NBC, Fox, etc and local UHF-frequency) over-the-air, for free.....even in digital. All you need is an inexpensive, indoor amplified antenna. The only problem is you'd have to live within 30 - 40 miles of the broadcast source, which I guess in rural areas isn't an option. But if you live close by any large metropolitan area, you should be able to pick up most of the signals.

As long as I can get the basic channels over my antenna I'll never go back to pay TV.

I don't watch as much T.V. as I used to but I like it.

It's easier for you guys to dislike it because you weren't raised in front of it. My generation was.

Yes I was. Single mom with four kids, Tv was our babysitter for years. My distaste in it is its boring. Ill fall alseep. It sucks my mind and creativity. Now theres some positive aspects of tv. From social and family bounding and keeping up on culture events and happenings.

Yep, it's fairly proven most people watch only a fraction of the pay channels offered, so my view is people should be able to pick and choose only the channels they want. If you only have two or three favorite channels, imagine how cheap your access "should" be? Of course this seems way too reasonable and fair, so will never be implemented by the pay industry. They enjoy gobbling up your money too much.

I agree with you Mo, I can't wait till my girls have outgrown cartoons and Nick. I don't think they would even miss any other channell. The only other news I watch are CNN or Fox.

Sometimes I'm just bored and I'll surf the channels and find something interesting on like Discovery Health or the Biography Channel, two channels that I rarely, if ever, watch. I like having a lot of channels though there are some, like the hunting channel and whatever that is, and also those religion channels and the Spanish channel, that I can do without.

I only watch Survivor, the History channel and Biography when I watch TV at all. I wish I could dump all the rest. I especially dislike the 15 sports and 12 religous stations I'm forced to pay for, not to mention the 20-30 non-English speaking channels, what a waste. I think Mo has the right idea I don't have an HDTV but I'm going to invest in an antenna and see if I can get the basics up here. If it works, I'm dumping the cable for good.

Go for it, Blonde!

I mostly watch PBS and occasional network fare like LOST or CW50 programs like Supernatural.

After switching to free digital I actually picked up five new stations. PBS has three now, two local network 24/7 weather channels, and something called WCSN (24 hour sports channel). Guess I just don't miss all the cable/satellite tv channels because I've gone so long without them.

I was up until 6 this morning, part of the time watching a pro-American WWII propaganda documentary on The Documentary Channel, which I did not even know I had.

Btw, Blonde, here's some inexpensive indoor antenna choices.....

(Whatever you choose, make sure the antenna picks up VHF "and" UHF channel signals, which all these do)

Cornet Indoor TV Antenna $29.95

RCA - Indoor Amplified TV Antenna $30.99

Radio Shack Indoor VHF/UHF/HDTV Antenna with RF Remote Control $49.99

SharpShooter indoor TV antenna $96 (free shipping)

What you'd need depends on how close you are to the transmission sources. If you live far away I recommend getting an outdoor antenna. There are some good ones available for less than $200 (which only comes to about three months of your cable bill...lol).

For my new HDTV I'm still using my old indoor amplified antenna, and it brings in all my old channels in digital except one, but I'm still getting a good analog signal from their regular station. I'm not sure why I can pick up their analog signal and not the digital, unless they're broadcasting it at a much lower intensity. Maybe once everything switches to digital (Feb 2009) they'll hopefully boost the signal. If not I may look into getting a more powerful antenna.

Hope all this helps.

Mo

Winegard SS 3000 3000 Indoor UHF/VHF Antenna (SS-3000) $59

I may even try it myself.

Wow, awesome! Thanks for all the help Mo, now I've got a good place start. Great tips, I'll keep it all in mind.

I live in the foothills, but I'm close to Los Angeles so I'm hoping the signal will be clear enough for it to work. I would so love to tell my cable company to take a hike and save all that money. I'll check them out.

Sounds like another good candidate to ditch the dish/cable and switch to free TV.

Go for it, Rockin'.
