when you watch Extreme Home Makeovers? I cry every time! I just can't imagine what some of these families have been going through. What a great show this is!

I'm Guilty and not ashamed to admit it. Tonight's 2nd episode was a tear jerker for me. If everyone was as considerate as that 8 year old little girl the world would be a better place to live. She thought of her family first and you don't see that in kids much now days. One of my all time favorites was the show about the deaf family. Very Heart Touching.......

they do try to help people but there is a down side.. when the families misuse what they were given.. some were unintentional like one that borrowed after the 2 year contract to pay their sons medical bills and they are fixing to be foreclosed on, one family borrowed to start a construction business which they knew nothing about how to handle it..it does come with a price so to speak.. at last count there were 4 such homes.... really sad..but these shows make me cry too.. I only watched it off and on in the past, but I cannot get my favorite tv station in now so the one with the Home Makeovers is one of the few I get well now. I'll probably be watching it more often.
I'm sorry to hear some people misuse the gift they are given. But I suppose that is another aspect of reality.

I have also. When they give a handicapped kid a whole new way to live. I think I water up because I know the kid will not ever get to live a normal or complete life, but they make sure he or she can enjoy the time they have. Makes me realise how lucking I am to have healthy kids.

I never actually tune in to watch it. Only catch the tail end if I tune in early to see Desperate Housewives.
Did see this little guy one week, who couldn't walk, scootching around in a way he's learned to maneuver. His room fitted with a sink on the floor, and he was able to reach everything comfortably. I found it rather joyful. He was thrilled! And an elevator so he could visit his big brothers in their room without them carrying him. Often, it seems, it's just so darn joyful that the family has their worries taken away. Riches aside, they're now often mortgage and worry free. What price, peace of mind?

Added to that Pam, sometimes different companies take over their medical bills too. It's great to watch when people actually care about helping others.

Oh my gosh--once again a major tear jerker show! They go in to help one family and see all the devastation from the tornado and end up helping the entire town! Wonderful!

the down side of extreme makeover... this isnt the first one..
Victor Marrero was kissed by the gods of reality TV. After he and his Camden, N.J. rowhouse were depicted, roaches and all, on a February 2007 20/20 piece about his poor city, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition came a-calling. It was a whirlwind: by August 2007, he and the two of his five sons who still live at home were taking the keys to a five-bedroom home in Pennsauken, Penn., on property owned by Camden youth program Urban Promise and built by J.S. Hovnanian & Sons.
And then he faced the reality of living like the rich people do on a monthly pension of $939, which was not even enough for the 56-year-old man to afford the $11,500 annual cost of utilities and property taxes. Not to mention considerable debts Marrero had amassed in his years of living in poverty (not detailed by news reports) that were barely repaid by a $59,000 donation from the community. Marrero tried to sell the home -- he wanted to ask $499,000, a price that local real estate agents said would be hard to achieve -- but Urban Promise wouldn't let him.
This week, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports, he came to an agreement to sell the home back to Urban Promise for $275,000. Some of the organization's volunteer interns will live there, while Marrero is headed to parts unknown with his two boys and a comfortable nest egg.
Whether he's learned anything about using money wisely is debatable. Much like lottery winners, who probably displayed their doubtful financial literacy by using lottery tickets as an "investment" in the first place, the recipients of "extreme" largess are typically saved out of considerable financial holes by their brand-new homes. It is not to say that anyone who's struggling with poverty, illness, or other hardships don't "deserve" glitzy TV charity; but it is highly unlikely that many of them are able to quickly become conversant in the challenges of living large.
Especially if their incomes don't even leave enough cash left over to pay for the stamp to mail their bill payments. As often is the case on TV, it looks a lot better on the small screen than on the super-sized canvas that is life.

There was recently an article in the news about a family who used their 450,000 Extreme Home Makever home as loan collateral, and were being foreclosed on. Very sad. Grandiose, no doubt, but seems like more than some can handle.

Extreme Makeover: Foreclosed-Home Edition June 13th, 2009 Posted in News by Tim Manni
It has been going on for years. ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition has sought out families struggling both personally and financially and has rebuilt their home to better suit their needs. Unfortunately for several recipients, what has started out as a noble and deserving gift has turned into a nightmare. Another “Makeover” home has entered into foreclosure.
Each “Makeover” house that has entered into foreclosure, and there have been several, seems to follow the same pattern. The revamped homes get bigger, a lot bigger, and they’re usually filled with amenities that the homeowners weren’t used to accounting for before the remodel.
Bigger homes equal bigger bills. The heating and cooling bills rise, electric bills escalate, and sometimes so do property taxes. A “Makeover” home in Florida had a $29,000 lien placed against it because of numerous code violations.
This charitable formula seems to be broken. As we mentioned earlier, what starts out as a gift, is quickly turning into a financial burden. We sincerely hope that ABC re-examines the show’s purpose and chooses to provide these homeowners with a practical new home — not one that serves to make their situation even worse. Obviously ABC never intended for these homes to become a burden. Yet, ironically or not, the lavish “Extreme” remodels represent the kind of problems that got the country into this housing crisis in the first place.
