Attention Guitarists: Let's talk! |

Hello all,
I'm a guitar enthusiast and would love to talk to others who play -- tell me what you play, your style, if you're professional, your influences (in terms of artists), and your overall equipment.
I have four guitars, but my favorite is my EAN10-C A/E Takamine. I use light-gauge D'Addario strings, which I think make the Takamine's natural resonant, rich, almost "bassy" sound ring out even more. I taught myself to play about four years ago, and I've only played in public twice, but I have a pretty good amp/mic setup here at home, so the cats get serenaded a lot...
Question: How many of you regularly use a capo? I just have never used one, but I'm apparently missing something totally re: theory because plenty of excellent professional musicians use capos, but isn't it more for a quick tuning change, on stage, etc., as opposed to being "lazy?" I like to use different tunings, but of course I have time to go in and out of Double Dropped D or whatever --
Also, with enharmonics, WHY doesn't the guitar world just decide to call it one or the other: for example, Ab is really the same as D#, etc. Does that bug anyone else?
Thanks!
List favorite bands/artists!!
Mine are:
Steve Howe
Prince
Jimi Hendrix
Eddie Van Halen
Nancy Wilson
Lindsey Buckingham
Matthias Jabs (Scorpions)
Paul Simon
Brian May
Paul Kantner
Jeff Golub
Roger Fisher
Neal Schon
Jimmy Page
Mark Knopfler

Hi, I've been playing since i was 13 and i still suck But i have played in public quite a few times ! Once i played in front of a mcdonalds just to see if people would give me money, and they did !! Wish i knew how to read music though, never took a class in my life. I just play for my own good feelings so i really love to play and sing loud. one of my favorite songs is "closer to fine" by the indigo girls, it rocks. I can do some sublime songs really good too, at least i think so
Hey lets come up with a list of 'songs to impress your friends with' or 'songs that even those of us with crappy voices can do' like Creep by radio head, I can ROCK that one.
I've owned a few guitars in my life, but currently I got some cheapo acoustic guitar from mexico that actually sounds cool.
My electric days are over, well, give me an amp and i'll still blast out some slayer

That's a relevant question you posed about why some notes and chords are called or referred to the way they are, as opposed to what, in your perception, might be a more intuitive or logical way of naming them. I've always felt the same about B flat, as opposed to A# but having never had any formal schooling I just went with the flow....
I've also felt the same in regards to the use of a capo. Operative word there is in the past tense, though...for me, it makes forming chords in certain keys a whole lot easier, especially when enabling other fingering techniques which would require at least two more digits on a fretting hand to do if you didn't use one.
I've owned the same 000-sized flattop mahagony Ibanez since 1978. There's also a Brazillian rosewood Giannini Craviola classic somewhere in a closet here and a Harmony mandolin of equal vintage.
Some of my past and current guitar influences include:
Duane Allman
Chet Atkins
Jeff Beck
Eric Clapton
Ry Cooder
Leo Kotke
Les Paul
Bonnie Raitt
Django Reinhart
Frank Zappa

Here's an excellent example of how using a capo can afford a more dynamic style of picking:

I started playing guitar around 1978, did my first live show in 1982 as lead/rhythm in a HM band called TITAN. I quit altogether in 1994 after realising I was never to be a guitar God and it took me 11 years to realise that quitting was a big mistake.I started playing again about 10 months ago and thanks to the Internet (lots of tips and lessons) and tons of hard practice, I'm almost at the level as I was when I first quit. In fact, if I continue like this I should be able to think about writing and recording some new material.
I have an old 1974 issue Gibson Flying V, but I don't use that for day to day playing, the guitar I do use is one I had custom built by a friend almost 20 years ago. It has a beautiful Mighty Mite neck with single EMG pick-up.
Fave guitarists;
George Lynch
Vinnie Moore
Michael Schenker
Andy LaRoque (King Diamond)

I started playing when I was real young (1969) and was at one time semi professional when I lived in Texas. But then I moved to Montgomery Alabama and found nothing but musical snobs. People here act like if they haven't been playing with you, or heard you play, for years your not worth their time. Funny thing is some of them might have heard me play for years...if they've heard the right records!
I know nothing about theory and don't read music, don't need to as long as I have ears. I've used a Capo but have no real idea what to do with them.
I have too many amps and guitars to list but I'll mention a few:
Amps:
Sovtek Mig60 2x12 cab
Marshall JTM30 2x12
Peavey Express 112
Vox Cambridge
Guitars (short list):
Epiphone EJ200 (for sale)
Highland ac/el (for sale)
Ibenez Bob Weir Collectors (late 70's)
Robin Guitar ( I had custom made)
2 Telecasters I made myself....
plenty others
Fav Bands:
Roy Buchanan
Albert Lee
Albert King
Alvin Lee
Buddy Guy
Albert Collins
Stevie Ray Vaughn (got invited to play with him once)
Robert Johnson
Robert Jr. Lockwood
Heck...all the real Blues guys
OLD Rush
OLD Stones
Allmans
OLD Alice Cooper is always great
The Runaways

One of the best amps in the world for a classic clean sound is a Smith Custom Amp. Not cheap but completely hand made and well worth the $1600 if you gig!

Ok, so I don't play a six string
I'm a bassist, so that counts,,, right?
I've been playing bass for about 16 years. I started with Keyboards, but there was no real need for one around here. I've been in a band and performing for about 9 years. Covers Mostly, but Originals mixed in. It's a cool hobbie and the pay ain't that bad either.
I regularly play on my Schecter Diamond Series Studio Edition 5 string.
I also own:
(basses)
A 72' Fender P Bass
Dean Edge Q4
Dean Edge Q5
Dean Evo (It was a gift)
Erine Ball Music Man 5 String Stingray
(Guitars)
Gibson Humming bird Acoustic Guitar
LTD RH 202
My Amps are:
Ampeg SVT 4PRO Head
Ampeg HLF4x10 Cabnet
GK Backline 600 head (a back up...You never know)
Fender Rumble Bass 100 for practicing at home
Fender R-25 Combo for the guitar at home.
I also own a full PA. (I'm in a band so that's kinda a needed thing )
My influences range from Pink Floyd all the way to Disturbed. We mainly play what's hot at the moment in hard rock, but always keep close tabs on the popular older stuff.

Check out Jesse Cook - Nuevo Flamenco style, but makes Ottmar Liebert sound like Slowhand. Just amazing. Wish I could play like. I just know a bunch of chords and do the best I can to keep up with the likes of Tom Petty, the Eagles, the Doobie Brothers, John Fogerty, .. .classic rocker at heart. I play a cheap Fender Strat through a Marshall amp that I turn way down low so the neighborhood dogs don't start howling. Shopping for an accoustic and contemplating taking lessons. Never too old to rock and roll!

Thanks Ready!! I'm not a guitarist, but I am definitely an aficionado, particularly of 'nuevo flamenco' and totally agree with you. He's even better in concert than studio, I'm planning a road trip to San Diego for his September 7th concert there.
