Ray LaMontagne "Till the Sun Turns Black"

Review by Thom Jurek, All Music Guide

If it weren't for his singing voice, so full of smoke and ether, one would be hard-pressed to believe that Till the Sun Turns Black was made by the same man who recorded Trouble just two years ago. Ray LaMontagne takes a brave leap from the rootsy singer/songwriter material of his stellar debut album and goes nearly 180 degrees. Once more collaborating with legendary producer and multi-instrumentalist Ethan Johns, the singer and songwriter turns in a highly textured, atmospheric, and subdued performance on his sophomore effort — and hell yes that's a good thing. All the grit and earth in LaMontagne's voice on Trouble, and the basic country-folk and even R&B (on the title track) has been swept out the backdoor here. This new set of songs is startling all on its own. The reliance on skeletal yet delicate string arrangements adds so much to the interior nature of these songs. LaMontagne has used the projection in both his lyrics and his voice and turned them inside out. He's slower, more subtle, more restrained in everything he does. His lines are economical, full of space and tension, as if they were being performed in the middle of the night in a room alone. Johns' use of strings and keyboards paints LaMontagne's voice and underscores his sung lines with a drama that reveals itself inside the listener. Whole comparisons to Nick Drake will be forthcoming, no doubt, but it's only really accurate when thinking of Drake in his work with John Cale, who fully and implicitly understood the singer's intent.

Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes "Reach Up & Touch the Sky: Live"

Review by Bruce Eder, All Music Guide

One can only guess at the reasons why Columbia Records, during the four years that they had Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes under contract, never cut an official live album of the band — you'd think it would be a no-brainer, with an act that was this focused on performance, to do a concert album. (Then again, the Jukes are just part of a long list of Columbia acts, alongside the Byrds, Paul Revere & the Raiders, and Blood, Sweat & Tears, that never got recorded live during their prime hitmaking years.) Thus, it fell to their second label, Mercury Records, to do the obvious and release this, the group's first official live album, cut during June and July of 1980. The core of the original Jukes, including Billy Rush, Kevin Kavanaugh, Eddie Manion, Ricky Gazda, and Richard "La Bamba" Rosenberg, are still present, and the sound (which fades to silence between songs) is a good compromise, capturing the band up close but leaving in just enough audience presence — and excitement — and room ambience to allow the listener to get a sense of what the shows were like. Indeed, despite the slightly late date for the release, listening to this album will be, for many listeners, a trip back to their college days. The record is also a good outline of the group's history up to that time; the concert album was a means of getting their '70s Columbia repertory ("Talk to Me," "I Don't Want to Go Home," etc.) represented in the Mercury catalog — of the 15 tracks (which include a three-song medley), only five songs come from their two Mercury albums, and the rest are all derived from their earlier history. The performances themselves are all worthwhile, though the songs authored by Bruce Springsteen, Chuck Berry, and Sam Cooke do stand out over the band originals; during his Sam Cooke medley, Southside Johnny even vamps a few lines from "A Change Is Gonna Come," which is virtually sacred among Cooke's output, coming as close to singing it (without actually do so) as any white man might dare — indeed, this album is a reminder of the fact that, during the years when there were hardly any of Cooke's own recordings available, Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes kept the man's memory and repertory alive, and introduced it to a whole new generation of college students. Originally a low-priced double LP, it's now out as a much better sounding budget-priced single CD.

OK....I really love the way Ace Young sings this song....but I never really paid attention to the words before now. Aren't they a little strange? I'm just going to pretend the "father figure, preacher teacher, daddy, crime" words aren't there! LOL

Father Figure sung by Ace Young

That's all I wanted, something special,
Something sacred in your eyes,
For just one moment, to be bold and naked
At your side

Sometimes I think that you'll never understand me
Maybe this time is forever, say it can be

That's all you wanted, something special,
Someone sacred in your life
Just for one moment, to be warm and naked
At my side

Sometimes I think that you'll never understand me
But something tells me together, we'd be happy

I will be your father figure (Oh baby)
Put your tiny hand in mine (I'd love to)
I will be your preacher teacher (Be your daddy)
Anything you have in mind (It would make me)
I will be your father figure (Very happy)
I have had enough of crime (Please let me)
I will be the one who loves you
till the end of time

That's all I wanted
But sometimes love can be mistaken for a crime
That's all I wanted just to see my baby's blue EYES shine
This time I think that my lover understands me
If we have faith in each other
Then we can be strong

I will be your father figure
Put your tiny hand in mine
I will be your preacher teacher
Anything you have in mind
I will be your father figure
I have had enough of crime
I will be the one who loves you
till the end of time

If you are the desert, I'll be the sea
If you ever hunger - hunger for me
Whatever you ask for, that's what I'll be

So when you remember the ones who have lied
Who said that they cared
But then laughed as you cried
Beautiful darling, don't think of me

Because all I ever wanted
It's in your eyes baby, baby
And love can't lie, no...
(Greet me with the eyes of a child)
My love is always telling me so
(Heaven is a kiss and a smile)
Just hold on, hold on
I won't let you go, my baby

I will be your father figure
Put your tiny hand in mine
I will be your preacher teacher
Anything you have in mind
I will be your father figure
I have had enough of crime
So I am gonna love you
till the end of time
I will be your father
I will be your preacher
I'll be your daddy
I will be the one who loves you
till the end of time

All Along ~ Amanda Stott

You've been watching me from a distance,
Trying to keep the pieces all in place.
In my heart is a foolish persistence,
Been taking you for granted up until today.
What we have is good but could soon be gone,
Ain't it just like you to be so strong.

All along,
You've been right there waiting for me patiently.
All along,
While I was chasin' dream after dream on my own.
I've spent all my time
Tryin' to find the right star to wish upon.
I never knew that it was you
all along.

Can't you see the regret,
How it holds me,
Wrapped around my soul like a winter chill.
I could let it go if you told me
That you always loved me and you always will.
What we have is good but could soon be gone,
Ain't it just like love to be so strong,
Ain't it just like you
To keep our love burning strong.

All along,
You've been right there waiting for me patiently.
All along,
While I was chasin' dream after dream on my own.
I've spent all my time
Tryin' to find the right star to wish upon.
I never knew that it was you
All along.
