The La's "The La's"
Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
The La's were one of the few English alternative groups to keep traditional British guitar pop alive during the late '80s and early '90s. Drawing heavily from the punchy British Invasion sound of early Beatles, the Hollies, the Searchers, and the Small Faces, the group's eponymous debut is a swirling array of ringing guitar hooks and strong, undeniable pop melodies. Throughout the record, chief songwriter Lee Mavers turns out small, well-crafted gems, highlighted by the hit single "There She Goes," whose jangling hooks and sighing melodies simply scratch the surface of the abundance of pleasures on the record. While Mavers claimed at the time that the label forced him to release The La's, it's hard to imagine the record being any more infectious. As it stands, The La's was a refreshing slice of classicist guitar pop at the time of its release, and its charms have not faded over the years.
(Amended -- My advice: All lovers of musical, unbearably catchy pop-rock should get a hold of this album, pronto!!!...also, a splinter group, Cast, released an equally enjoyable album of melodic, guitar-driven rock, "All Change"...highly recommended)

Sheesh, I love the genre those bands represent, aselune. Like me you probably love New Order, Yaz, and the Pet Shop Boys, too.

Amazon Editorial:
The meat of the bonus material is the London show. A mythology has built around it that the band were so disorientated by travel and culture shock and Bruce so enraged by label-generated hype that they gave one of the worst performances of their career. Primitively shot by today's standards, the footage captures the brilliance of the relatively new band's ensemble playing. Highlights include a "Thunder Road" accompanied only by keyboards that opens the show, fiery solos on "Kitty's Back," a dynamic "Saint in the City," and a number of songs that have long since been retired. It's certainly notable how pensive and joyless Springsteen appears when compared to his later, animated stadium persona, but it's also fun to see the far greater role as foil played by Clarence Clemons. As he now testifies in the sleeve notes, putting lie to the myth, on that night they had "gone for broke," and as this writer can bear witness, the British audience exalted the show as the arrival of the greatest live performer of his generation. --Rob Stewart

Dolly Varden "Forgiven Now" album (Released Mar 26, 2002)
Review by Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
"It's happened — transfiguration complete. With its fourth album, Chicago's Dolly Varden has taken the formidable strengths of each recording — first evidenced way back in 1995 on Mouthful of Lies — and combined them in a seamless, breathtaking collection of rock and pop songs that embrace country music's gloriously complex heart without calling into play any of its cultural clichés, which have unfortunately been embraced by "alterna-twang" crowd over the past decade. Dolly Varden stands on its own as a rock band first. Part of the credit goes to the bandmembers' fortitude; they've hung on for seven years without a personnel change. Part also goes to the teaming once again with Nashville's Brad Jones, who worked with DV on 2000's Dumbest Magnets. But most of the credit has to go to the bandmembers themselves, particularly the dual front-person lineup of singers and songwriters Diane Christiansen and Stephen Dawson. Added to the mix on Forgiven Now is legendary Nashville session picker Al Perkins on pedal steel, adding a textured depth and dimension to the proceedings. While Forgiven Now displays a next step in terms of the band's growth and promise, it's a big one. The songwriting here has moved to a level where the excess is gone and the economy of language, instrumentation, and even hooks is given first priority...."

Creed...One Last Breath
gives me chills
Please come now I think I'm falling
I'm holding to all I think is safe
It seems I found the road to nowhere
And I'm trying to escape
I yelled back when I heard thunder
But I'm down to one last breath
And with it let me say
Let me say
Hold me now
I'm six feet from the edge and I'm thinking
That maybe six feet
Ain't so far down
I'm looking down now that it's over
Reflecting on all of my mistakes
I thought I found the road to somewhere
Somewhere in His grace
I cried out heaven save me
But I'm down to one last breath
And with it let me say
Let me say
Hold me now
I'm six feet from the edge and I'm thinking
That maybe six feet
Ain't so far down
Sad eyes follow me
But I still believe there's somthing left for me
So please come stay with me
'Cause I still believe there's something left for you and me
For you and me
For you and me
Hold me now
I'm six feet from the edge and I'm thinking
