I just read this book - very good - couldn't put it down....
It is amazing what people can do to survive! Love really does triumph in the end!!!
Did anyone see the movie?? 'Wonder if it is as good as the book?

The movie, while missing the subtleties of the book, is a spectacle and has some excellent (and Oscar-snubbed acting) by Gong Li who plays Hatsumomo with a great fierceness and screen presence, and is also unbelievably youthful and beautiful for a forty year old woman. Zhang Ziyi as Sayuri is only given so much of a role and is competent, but not nearly as good as Gong Li/
The costumes and the art direction and cinematography are all beautifully woven together. The film itself was snubbed for best picture, but not a win.
And the score is one of the best of John Williams' career.

When I saw the trailers for the movie, I had bought the book and loved it. Then once it was in theaters I went to see it right away. I was a little disappointed that it left out some stuff from the book but then it wouldn't be a 2 hour movie. I did love the movie though.

Hmm, I guess I should read the book since I loved the movie enough to buy the DVD. It was a bitter-sweet story of the (relative) triumph of love in the life of someone who never had any control over her life except through some hope and faith.

I have the book and the movie.. I loved them both. I bought and read the book a few years back.. can't remember when it first came out. The movie is visually stunning. Just beautiful.

I also loved this book...and I thought it was interesting to read it while I'm in Japan, maybe significant?? I'm not really sure! Anyways, I also couldn't put it down, it was excellent. I haven't yet seen the movie, although I'm interested in watching it. I guess the only thing thats disappointing is that they used a Chinese actress to play Sayuri, which is too bad, because it's definetely a Japanese novel (even though it was written by an American man, his expertise is Japanese history etc) So I'm looking forward to seeing the movie, especially since I've heard very good things about the cinematography.

You're right, I found it strange that they used mainly Chinese actresses for the movie...

I read the book 2 years before I saw the movie.. The Movie was very good, if you read the book.. I seen it at least 5 times.. Movies never quiet measure up to books, but this was so close to achieving perfection.
