I saw the new Superman movie on Sunday and was pretty much disappointed.
Without giving away anything...did anyone else see it? What did you think?

Call me crazy but I enjoyed the movie very much. They set themselves for a number of different ways to go for sequels down the road. And the graphics were incredible.

'Wolf's right, Superman Returns was quality.
X-Men 3 was better, even if Brian Singer didn't produce/direct/write it.

I hate to give away too much of the storyline, in case people who haven't seen it are reading this.
I agree that the special effects were fantastic -- obviously, we've come a long way since Christopher Reeves donned the blue tights for the first time.
But....didn't any of you think this guy was doing an imation of Reeves? Some of the dialogue was even lifted word-for-word from the first movie! And, Rousch (is that how you spell the new guy's name?) even delivered the lines in an identical manner. It was very unsettling. And at the beginning of the movie, the falling through the barn thing was almost frame-for-frame from "Smallville."
On a positive note, I *loved* Kevin Spacey's Lex Luthor. I'm a fan of his work, anyway (Kevin Spacey, not Lex Luthor! ) but I thought he hit just the right deranged-bad-guy note.
[ASIDE: I'd love to see the kid who plays Lex Luthor on Smallville play an adult Lex Luthor in time. He plays Lex very coldly, with dead eyes. *shudder*]
Last point -- Kate Bosworth. Ick. Ick. Ick.

I went in unsure of how I would respond to this film. I vaguely remember the original movies and am more familar with Lois & Clark and most currently Smallville. But I was hooked in from the opening credits!
I agree that this actor portraying Superman was very much like Christopher Reeves. I think that worked though.
I did think about Smallville very frequently throughout the film but I had to keep reminding myself that the movie was a sequel to the original films and had nothing really to do with the TV show per se'.
I do intend on seeing it again and there's only certain films I'll see more than once.

Lex on "Smallville" is 31????!!!???
Wow.....I had no idea. I figured he was mid-20s, tops.
He makes a great, creepy Lex, though.

"string bean"?
The only way Brandon Routh could be more muscular would be if he took the same steroids McGuire, Bonds, Sosa and every WWE wrestler whose forehead looks like it came from Frankenstein's lab took and takes.
My problems with the movie weren't cosmetic at all.

I am biased cos i love Superman!
I saw this film about two weeks ago. In my opinion this was a great film! I know the word "great" is used too much but in terms of sentimentality of what Superman represents i thought it was a great return... excuse the pun!
Brandon Routh is fantastic as Superman... and just last Saturday i got told i look a bit like him, i don't think so... but i think its my hair more than anything.
Kevin Spacey is probably the best villain... even better than Gene Hackman in those 1980's films.
Superb special effects, good sound track, good script!
No need to guess.... i'll be buying the DVD when it comes out!

The ending is what sucked, it took too long to end it. That should have been the middle of movie and not the end, the rest of the movie was alright though, lots of action.

I liked the movie, thought it was okay. Not great, but good.
Yes, Routh was very much like Christopher Reeve, but that was more than likely intentional, for continuity's sake. Everyone has an idea of how Superman acts and reacts, mostly due to Reeve's portrayal. (I believe Routh was also picked because he physically resembles Reeve...very similar facial features, to me anyway).
I know I hate it when a series of shows gets a new actor or actors; it just ruins it for me. They had to get a new Superman actor for obvious reasons, but would want to keep him as similar as possible to what people are used to and comfortable with (Reeve).
Razz, oh HP-obsessed one--I heard a rumor (hopefully false!!) that they are thinking of replacing the three main players in Harry Potter (Harry, Hermione, and Ron) because they are getting older. If they do that (oh please no!!!), don't you think they would make them as similar to the current ones as possible, for continuity's sake? And have them portray the characters as closely as possible, for the same reason?
And when Dumbledore had to be replaced (again, for obvious reasons), people complain that the new guy does not portray Dumbledore like Richard Harris did. (That's in another current thread, by the way.)

I grew up on Superman and his DC universe friends and have to say I was pretty impressed with Returns. I agree on some of the comments regarding Routh's portrayal being a "copy" of Reeve's, but like it's been said in previous posts, it's for continuity reasons considering Returns IS a sequel to the original and in some aspects Superman II also. As with Routh being a stringbean... Sure he's not Arnie, but he fills the suit like he should. He's Superman, the strongest man on earth, he doesn't need to look like a tank to boost his ego because he IS strong.
Although quite similar in stature and performance to Reeve I thought Routh explored a troubled lonely Superman, which hasn't really been tried as a theme before and it worked. At the end of the day Superman might hang up his cape, but Clark Kent is his disguise. He will always be Superman, and alone unlike Bruce Wayne and Peter Parker who assume their alter egos with masks and live a normal life as their social personifications. He was born Superman. Different.
Back to the film though, having grown up on this sort of stuff, did anyone else get shivers when they heard John Williams' score over the opening titles which followed the design of the originals? A beautiful and familiar transition to the new Superman. This film makes you appreciate two things. Just how far technology has come to make you believe a man can fly, and how groundbreaking the arduous physical effects were in the original.
