I think it depends on the place.. there are some restaurants where I would feel totally out of place in a dress, and visa versa... and it depends on which date it is.. first date would not necessarily be in a posh restaurant and would most probably be at a small cafe or coffee spot.. so jeans.

I live in Phoenix guys...here it's denim shorts, clam diggers, or for formal attire, full length jeans. 
Actually though, dinner's usually slacks with a halter top lately.

Totally depends on where you are going. All of the above would be fine. In Charleston even the swankiest restaurants you'll see casual attire. Nice dress pants and top or a cute little to the knee skirt,,perfect!
