Does anyone else remember the good food you used to get at the Woolsworth food counter.
I found the recipe for the cheesecake which was some of the best cheesecake I ever ate. Does anyone else have any of their recipes?
Woolworth's Cheesecake
1 (3 ounce) package lemon Jell-O 1 cup boiling water 8 ounces cream cheese 1 cup granulated sugar 5 tablespoons lemon juice 1 can Carnation milk, well chilled Graham crackers, crushed
Dissolve Jell-O in boiling water. Cool until slightly thickened.
Beat cream cheese, sugar and lemon juice with mixer until smooth. Add thickened Jell-O and beat well.
In a separate bowl, beat the Carnation milk until fluffy. Add cream cheese/Jell-O mixture and beat well with mixer.
Line bottom of 9 x 13-pan with crushed Graham crackers.
Spread filling over and top with more crushed Graham crackers. Chill.
Make sure the canned milk is really cold before you beat it.

We don't use crackers for cheesecake base. Crackers here are usually biscuits for cheese. We use sweetmeal biscuit.

They had the best sandwiches and hot dogs you ever ate.
I tried this cheesecake recipe, it is not the same, I was disappointed.

Memories.... when I was 19 or so I upped and got a job in Los Angeles. As I set up housekeeping in my new apartment, I would frequent Woodworth's and sometimes treat myself to dinner before heading home. What I remember most was that the price was right. I let my bosses do the treating at lunch to the more trendy downtown restaurants.
Recipes from Woolworth's? No, but I if you want to ask me about recipes for some seriously good cooking I acquired a taste for by living in Los Angeles, I have a collection.
