Not sure if it is preferable....? But.......a vibrator is yet just another avenue for both the male and female to enjoy.......an addition to their love making....not a replacement for the caring male......the caring male will use all different ways to please his lover....including a vibrator. A vibrator works both ways....for both parties........experiment and enjoy!

Preferable?
Well it depends on whether she likes to be touched or not by that "available" man. 
There ARE cases when it's preferable ...but generally it's an "accessory" to the sexual relationship, sometimes alone or sometimes shared. (And not every woman is "into" vibrators -- and there are some that would, if they'd ever try )
(Not all "availible men" are necessairily "bedroom material"  ...a person may use skim milk in their coffee when that's all they have, but sometimes there's nothing like a dollop of good ol' cream!  )
