At a school in Portland Maine they just decided to give birth control pills to 11 year olds. Now I understand kids are having sex at a younger age these days, but I don't feel this is exactly the right way to go. With all the STDs out there, wouldn't condoms be the better way to go? I understand they want to prevent pregnancies but what about protecting these kids from stds? Why not give out condoms too? There was no mention or thought of that. Five kids in that school are sexually active, and I think a little over 100 people signed up for the program to get the free pills.

Also .... the school isn't going to notify parents if their kids are getting birth control through the school.

Schools have been giving out condoms for quite awhile-it was a big controversy.
I'd rather see condoms than bcp, but everything helps.

Let me clarify
I didn't have sex until I was 20, but kids are starting awful young. Often on school grounds.
It is up to both parents and teachers to guide.
Is there a problem specifically part of the OP query? Could there be a link to this problem posted? Thanks.

they're going to do it. why not prevent them from being pregnant?
you're not going to stop kids from having sex. do you want to have pregnant 11 year olds on your hands because you're blind to the fact that 11 year olds have sex now?

Um, what do you mean by 'now'? This isn't something new guys. I'm pushing 64 and remember clearly how many girls got pregnant at hideously young ages even when I was in that same age bracket. It was even worse then because so many had absolutely no clue what was even happening to them. I haven't googled it, but I'll bet the teenage pregnancy rate is lower now than it was then.

Wow 11 year olds having sex...thats crazy. Im just wondering something...now there not going to inform the parents from what I hear...but what does happen if the birth control doesnt work? Now im not sure but dont 11-13 year old forget to do a lot of stuff...like brush there teeth...im sure a few will forget to take the birth control. What happens if they get pregnant...is the school nurse going take them to the abortion clinic with out asking their parents to? Hmm I wonder what kind of effect having an abortion does to someone that young. I hear that older women have them and then some regret it. Also about STD's...ya having an ever lasting STD at 11 sounds great(sarcasm).

if they have the birth control it's no one's problem but their own if they screw it up.
if they are going to choose to act like adults and not little kids they are going to have to accept ALL the consequences that come with it...STDs, kids, and stigmas.

Thats true but I think what other people do affect us...just like all the kids that dont have a dads...most of them are in trouble all the time...at least thats what the studies say...which affects us...especially if there out stealing our cars and crap...sorry Its sad that 11 year olds are having sex. Yes at 11 I knew about sex but it wasnt something that was on my mind. I was still playing with my barbies and exploring the woods . Maybe that was just me.

Kids are having sex earlier every year it seems. I think sex education, responsibility and instilling good morals in kids has to start at a much younger age now. Birth control at such a young age may be necessary, but unfortanately we don't know the long term effects of this. Recently had a 15 year old girl who suffered a blood clot in her brain come to ER. Directly related to the use of birth control pills. Parents need to wake up and face reality.

Back when I was in high school we had mandatory sex education classes, they showed us films and basically told us it was wrong to do it. I doubt they would have that in the high schools of today, maybe grammar schools now. Times sure have changed.

Here is the article from the Portland Press Herald.
Prescribe 'the pill' at middle school? Student health officials say a broad contraceptive program is 'totally needed.'
By KELLEY BOUCHARD Staff Writer October 16, 2007
Learn more about school-based health centers in Maine and nationally. Students who have parental permission to be treated at King Middle School's health center would be able to get birth control prescriptions under a proposal that the Portland School Committee will consider Wednesday.
The proposal would build on the King Student Health Center's practice of providing condoms as part of its reproductive health program since it opened in 2000, said Lisa Belanger, a nurse practitioner who oversees the city's student health centers.
If the committee approves the King proposal, it would be the first middle school in Maine to make a full range of contraception available to some students in grades 6 to 8, said Nancy Birkhimer, director of teen health programs for the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. Most middle schoolers are ages 11-13.
Although students must have written parental permission to be treated at Portland's school-based health centers, state law allows them to seek confidential health care and to decide whether to inform their parents about the services they receive, Belanger said.
Proponents say a small number of King students are sexually active, but those who are need better access to birth control.
Of 134 students who visited King's health center during the 2006-07 school year, five students, or 4 percent, reported having sexual intercourse, said Amanda Rowe, lead nurse in Portland's school health centers.
"This is a service that is totally needed," Rowe said. "It's about very few kids, but they are kids who don't have the same opportunities and access as other students."
The percentage of middle school students in Maine who reported having sexual intercourse dropped from 23 percent in 1997 to 13 percent in 2005, according to the Maine Youth Risk Behavior Survey.
"Thirteen percent is still more than one in 10 students," Birkhimer said.
The School Committee will meet at 7 p.m. in Room 250, Portland Arts and Technology High School, off Allen Avenue.
Robert O'Brien, who chairs the committee's policy subcommittee, said his panel has yet to discuss the proposal.
He declined to comment until after the matter has been aired.
The issue could stir controversy, as it has in the past.
"I'm personally fine with it, but I know some parents might not be," said Jennifer Southard, wife of City Councilor Edward Suslovic, who has two daughters at King. "I think information and access are good things. I would hope my children would come to me, but some students might not have that option."
The city's Division of Public Health, which made the birth- control proposal, operates seven health centers in Portland Public Schools in an effort to increase access to physical, dental and mental health care.
They are located at Portland High School, Deering High School, Casco Bay High School, King Middle School, West School special education program, and two elementary schools -- Reiche Community School and East End Community School.
The first centers opened in the high schools more than a decade ago, Belanger said.
There are 27 school-based health centers in Maine, 20 of which are funded and overseen by the state, including those in Portland, Birkhimer said.
There are more than 1,700 school-connected health centers in the United States.
One in four provides birth control ranging from condoms to prescription contraception, said Divya Mohan, spokeswoman for the National Assembly on School-Based Health Care.
Last year, Portland's program cost about $500,000 to operate, including state and foundation grants, MaineCare/Medicaid and private health insurance reimbursements, and in-kind contributions of space and services provided by the city, Belanger said.
Of 2,877 students eligible to attend Portland's seven health centers last year, 1,261, or 44 percent, were enrolled. The center at King, which has 510 students, enrolled 134 students and tallied 266 visits last year, Belanger said.

One big reason this is horribly wrong is because the school will be doing it behind the parents' backs. Schools have to have signed permission to give kids medicine the doctor prescribes but they're going to give birth control pills out to little girls without notifiying the parents. Schools do not have the right to interfere in the parent/child relationship if there's no abuse. If I were a parent I would seriously consider pulling my kids out of that school. Will the school take responsibility if the girl has an adverse reaction to birth control pills? Will the school be there when these little girls become depressed once they figure out the boys they honestly thought they were "in love" with only wanted them for sex. It's hard enough on mature women. There's no way young girls are emotionally equipped to handle that. Young girls, especially ones who develop very young and don't have fathers around have always had sex so it's not a new thing. My mother got pregnant with me when she was barely 13. I'm sure she and my dad (and me) had more problems than most young familes do because of their age and immaturity but we survived and I don't know of any other family more close and loving than ours ended up being despite the rough start. I'm definitely not advocating girls having babies when they're still kids themselves but I think I'm more qualified than most to say teenage pregnancy isn't the worst thing that can happen. My mom ended up pregnant with the first guy she had sex with and had to grow up way too fast but she was a wonderful parent with a little help from my granny the first few years. Would her life have turned out better if she had been on the pill and then possibly become promiscuous when my dad moved on to someone new as he probably would have? I don't know but I hope she doesn't feel that way.

There are many single parent families.....My household for starters......BUT IT TAKES parent involvement.....I worked less....did without....I made choices...and have never had trouble with my sons....My younger 17 still a virgin...(yes I asked if I could post) He has respect for young women . old women..all women..... PEOPLE OPEN YOUR EYES KIDS BEHAVIOR STARTS IN THE HOME not the schools...not the absent parent...but the home where they live...Our kids are a reflection of what we taught them....man dont get me started on this.

Candy, so you'd rather have pregnant 11 year olds than have your kids get birth control without your knowledge?
The girls don't HAVE to take them. It's an option. Because, you know....some girls are having babies at 11...and we would really like to prevent that, as it actually does affect the entire society when pockets of 11 year old girls start breeding.
