The gym is hella more strenuous and I plow it sometimes during sex. I checked it with a heart rate monitor. My girlfriend and I had this same discussion and we were both curious to put it to the test 
I guess it depends on what your level of other physical activity is. To some people it might be a workout but not in the same league as going to the gym and interval training or pumping iron after a 20 minute run.
My personal belief is the adrenaline and emotional exertion makes it feel like more of a workout than it really is. If you tried to turn sex into a real aerobic workout, you'd both get hurt LOL.

Exactly, katy ! It's not "sex" which is healthy and relaxing , but orgazm.
Guys tend to equate sex with orgazm for the obvious reasons, thus completely missing the point.
When I hear the usual complaints about "not getting any" from one's GF, I always ask if he made sure he gave her orgazm the last time he had sex with her. And as it turns out , the answer is always negative. No wonder the girl has no reason whatsoever for wanting more of "blue balls", who would? Sexual frustration is , in fact, very destructive for both physical and pchychologycal health. I always say : give a gal good orgazm and she'll be back for more. But give her "blue balls"/ sexual frustration - and no wonder the next time any mentioning of sex with you will cause her headach...

I like exercises. Most of the time. I do have times where it is last on my list of things to do.

And the focus can be on certain muscle groups at various times.
Thighs & glutes get a good work out in one position ... then change a bit to work the abs ..
Biceps ...
Triceps ...
Depending upon one's creativity ...
and flexibility

Abs are the toughest to work on for me, Jen. If those late night infomercials are any indication it must be tough for a lot of people...lol.
