So what's wrong with polygamy? Why do we have the right to tell consenting adults that they can't marry whomever they choose? As long as they all consent, I don't have a problem with it.
(I, personally, don't ever want to do it because I don't share well. It's not something that I want for my daughter. If my son chose that lifestyle, I'd think he was a disgusting pig.)
The key phrase is consenting adults. I do not have a problem with consenting adults living their lives as they see fit. I have a problem with kidnapping children against their will and raping them. I have a problem if the men are abusing their wives or children. I have a problem if those families aren't self-sufficient. Those are other issues; they aren't polygamy.
A question I often have is "How does one man support all those wives and children?" Do the wives work? Or are they on government assistance? Mind you, I fully support government assistance to get someone over a bump in the road but to permanently support a lifestyle choice is not what the welfare system was designed for.
So forget about kidnapping, raping children, and other abuse. Separate those things out. What's wrong with legitimizing polygamy?

i figure the basic answer will come back to your answer. very few people are willing to share. i don't know if a woman would want several husbands. men aren't as independent as they represent. ya better give a little thought to cleaning up after 2 or more men oh, and the ever popular "honey, where are my shoes, socks underwear etc"  i don't have a problem with what goes on inside someone elses circle. as long as that circle does not intrude on my circle

Nothing you said is a valid reason to legalize or not legalize polygamy.
PS: Find your own damn shoes and socks if you want to wear them. Or call your mom.

there are 2 options to answer your initial question. i feel i gave you a reasonable opinion and all i have left is that the politicians got together and voted and said it would be illegal. so, selfish and voted illegal. perhaps we can blame the selfish wife of the politician?

it was made illegal because of religion.. it should not be legalized because of the implications.. one man + 5 wives + 5 children per wife = a 31 member household.. ( equals the household paying no income taxes and qualifying for welfare and health care - in spite of the wages earned by the adults. This sort of messes up the national average) of 1 man + 1 wife + 2 children = a 4 member household..
....and 5 women to one man will never be equaled out by 5 men and one woman.. there will be 4 males looking for mates.. solution is the same as for gay marriages -you want to do it, just do it.. but don't expect it to be legalized. And, be happy that you live in a country that does not care what you do in the privacy of your own home...

I don't think the government ought to sanction marriage for anyone since marriage is a religious thing. Since government does sanction marriage for heterosexual couples, marriage ought to be sanctioned for gay couples as well. Equality and all, ya know. Polygamy throws a wrench into my arguement because the tax exemptions subsidize their personal religious choice. Maybe the tax laws needs to be revisited to eliminate personal exemptions. Or return marriages to the churches where they belong.
And, be happy that you live in a country that does not care what you do in the privacy of your own home.. Are you sure about that?

My father's father was an Islamic polygamist. He had four wives concurrently and countless concubine and one night stands.
He also was a self made millionaire and a unrecovered alcoholic. He died alone.
My father can count 15 legitamate siblings. He has no idea how many illigimate siblings he has, so if an Iranian tells me there from Tehran, I kiss them and call them "cousin".
I've got no problems with "moral/legal" polygamy per say. If three woman want to share one man, more power to them. 
Personally, one woman is more than enough for me to feed, make children with, clean up after, spoil, talk to, and love.
I think the social stigmazation in the U.S. for the offspring would bear more than adequate arguements against it. Parents should always do what's best for their young.

I think the biggest problem has surfaced recently, .... we have the guys with two or three different families and twenty children. They file for welfare and support from the state. It has recently been discovered that some of these guys are making a really comfortable living from state support money. The more children they have, the bigger income they make. In Utah this the problem they are struggling with. The other is that dad's of young girls are arranging marriages to older men for a fee. So then there is the pedofile issue which is being hidden under the name of religon.
I personally would not want my tax money supporting them. Of course this is a national problem too, ... not only in polygamy. A person can father children with different women and they can file for help from the state. Again, the more children, the bigger income. Maybe the whole system needs to be reworked and looked at.

Fortunetly the system has been revamped (but slowly), like in California, a parent can not receive more income on basis of having more children. This stopped a few years ago. Also a parent that does not work must show proof by physicians that they are not capable of working do to a disability. Unfortunetly some slip through the loop-holes of red tape, but do eventually get caught in time.
The ones that are hard to catch and cause our taxes to increase are those that are on the run from state to state working under the table. One good thing is they do lose their driver's license if child support is not being paid.
Sorry to be off topic, but when a wrong takes place, the penalties do catch up.

I'm jealous and don't want to share. How come the women can't have more than one husband?? The women that I have been involved with did not want to share me with other women. Sorry, maybe I just don't understand how someone who really loves thier spouse or partner would want to share them with someone else. Guess I'm old fashioned.

More power to em...if they can support the family without government assistance then I dont feel like its my business to say how many wives/husbands you can have. I dont like the idea of the government in my bedroom. I dont care who gays marry, I dont care if you want an abortion, its none of my business and I dont understand why some people have to make it thiers. I think most of our laws are still based on religon, which is fine, but if you are going to have seperation of Church and State then it needs to be consistant across the board. And I belive that outlawing polygamy is a relgious based law. One day I hope that we Americans can learn to live together as humans and stop worring about what the Jones's are doing in thier bedrooms.

To me it would not be a religious or legal issue. It would instead be a personal one.
I do not believe you can have true committment or intimacy with more than one person. It is a very deep sharing of self and meant for only one special person.
I would have never considered sharing my husband in this manner, but if it's what other people want, I have no problem with that.
I think there would probably be a strong sense of community with polygamy, but I would rather have the intimacy that comes with one loving partner.

Polygamy is illegal because modern women don't want to share a man with another woman. And their anger toward the practice caused laws to be made to change the earlier status quo.
If men had their way most wouldn't be bothered at all to have more than one wife, and in fact would entertain the idea wholeheartedly, as long as they could handle it financially or weren't required to do so. In Russia, men commonly produce offspring, and then go find another younger woman to produce still more offspring. It's SOP there.. And they ARE NOT required to pay child support either. No wonder Russian women want to live here and find an American husband. It certainly is a better option for her and her future children, that's for sure.
It's in men's genes to persue women aggressively, and this means mostly sexually too.
God never did dissolve polygamy, our governments did. When the Bible speaks of a man being good to his wife, it refers to his wife collectively, whether he has one or 21. The verses are refering to his kindness and his obedience, not to his having (just) one wife.
A person may want to argue this point, but the point still remains, that nowhere in any place in any Godly Bible does it say that polygamy has been removed from society. It just isn't to be found there. It is still allowed by God, 100%
There are two kinds of laws. God's Laws, and man's laws, and the abolition of polygamy is man's law, not God's law. Someday we will all be under just God's law, but that time is still down the road a bit.

God's word does have scriptures pertaining to singular marriages, this one below is pertaining to those that Minister for him:
1 Tim. 3:
1 This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.
2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
and regarding on husband; one wife:
1 Cor. 7:
1 Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman.
2 Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.
3 Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband.
And again...
Ephesians 5: (Singular)
31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
